I must confess, I had expected that behind her calm self which everyone who met her mentions without exception, there would be something unexpected, like the boldness to ask a guy to stay over for a ramen snack. It was a rainy, quiet afternoon--on my way to meet Lee Young-Ae in a room decorated in red that can be reached by going down a seemingly endless flight of stairs, I had all along thought that I would certainly get to see the as yet unseen side of her. My curiosity further amplified when I saw her silently move about among dozens of staffs all throughout the photographing process. While she was changing her costume and makeup, I took the chance to approach her. "Oh, hello." Incredibly, a big smile spread over her fair face. "Many people I met told me that I seem rather cold at first sight, which I suppose is perhaps because of my looks. So I try to show smile and approach others before they do. But when you work for a movie or TV drama, it's better to start out cold and finish well, rather than have a good start but fail later. Therefore I try not to hurry when I approach something." However, I still couldn't fathom the depth of her surreal pale brown eyes.
I thought that she must be afraid and nervous. She, who had been loved across the whole country as Jang-Geum, the Candy-like character who 'never cries no matter how lonely or sad she is', had chosen <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance> as her next movie, the story of a woman who carries out ruthless and bloody revenge. The movie, which will be the third and concluding piece of director Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy combining the kidnapping and confinement idea from <Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance> and <OldBoy> respectively, is the story of Keum-Ja who goes to jail under false charge and takes revenge after her release, and the choices that she faces at the end of the revenge. It is entirely left up to Lee Young-Ae to make believable the drastic change in Keum-Ja's personality that occurs between before and after her release from prison. It suddenly came to my attention that her characters in her previous films had seldom shown strong emotional ups and downs. Moreover, unlike Park Chan-Wook's former movies where two or more male characters led the story, she is the one and only lead in the new movie. Even while the staffs were changing the films and sets, she was standing still, presumably immersed in thoughts. I asked her how she feels about her upcoming film and its challenges. "I chose this movie precisely because it was too complex to be summarized in one word. I felt the moment I read the script that this would be a difficult one, but I trusted the director enough to take the risk." A calm response that allows no chance of nitpicking. She was certainly not a person to reveal her feelings as they are through her words or expressions. But when she stood in front of the camera, an unfamiliar fatality which had never been perceived in her TV commercials showed through for a brief moment. It wasn't because the photographer rarely asked her to smile during the shooting; it was Lee Young-Ae herself that was now one step away from the ever cheerful and smiling Jang-Geum, and one step closer to the kindly Keum-Ja who completely erased her smile off the face all of a sudden. It was a change hard to describe in words, like the subtle change of air.
The filming of <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance> will begin in November and be carried out in secrecy as thorough as that of <OldBoy>. Regardless of her own intentions, this movie will be considered her most advanturous choice in her career. "Keum-Ja is a highly multi-faceted character. While most people's emotion changes from A to B, her mood tends to jump directly to F. At first sight, it may be difficult to understand the motivations behind her behaviors." But according to director Park Chan-Wook, Lee Young-Ae was the only person who liked the first draft of the script for <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>, and to quote producer Lee Byeong-Hoon, she "can be very precise and unyielding at times--she never accepts a demand for a performance that she cannot be convinced of". And Lee Young-Ae herself is quietly declaring that she can understand Keum-Ja and make her convincing. In hindsight, the characters she had played, from Major Sophie Jean, the meticulous investigator who had her own painful secret about her family, and Eun-Soo, the divorced woman who for some reason came to disbelieve in love, to Jang-Geum, who never loosened her grip on her revenge while eloquently reciting the names of numerous pharmaceutical plants and professional medicinal terms, had never once attempted to explain themselves to others. Nonetheless, the viewers could eventually guess the untold personal circumstances of Eun-Soo. Once again, she's apparently planning to convince the audience of Keum-Ja's revenge without spelling it out one by one.
The interview came to an end, and only half my expectation was met. There was no movie-like unexpectedness, nor a display of dramatic emotions. What's left are the pictures that barely managed to capture her sensitive facet, and an eager wait for <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance>--that is, the curiosity for Lee Young-Ae's Keum-Ja, whose inexpressibly bitter revenge she will portray at her own unwavering pace.
