It wasn't beginning to end laugh out loud comedy but I thought it had enough comedy, good story, and surprising depth to make it all around good movie on teenage highschool theme. I especially liked the way it didn't end in sugar coated typical Hollywood happy end cop out. And though the last fight scene made some audience to cringe, understandably so, to me it was quite poigniant the way director choose to portray it that way. It was quite refreshing. ! t& {% N# |! N

Yeah, the last fight scene was the best part for me, in that it was so clumsy and spiteful, like every school fight I watched (and the few I was in) as a kid, rather than some stylized, heroic battle.

8 L' m- K& q V: ~8 E9 z% l Yeah I thought that's what was the whole point of the movie. After all the built up through a rumor mill about their legendary fighting capabilities, in the end the reality is nothing but legendary. It's messy, childish, and anything but heroic - which is what a real fight is like. ) B7 e+ U$ F; R" W: h) e' ]9 E2 S: N' S
Even the knife which was Rambo knife feared by everyone in the previous sequence turned out to be a small rusty switch blade. I thought this was the very typical of Korean movies and thing that sets them apart from Hongkong or Japanese movies. That they go for raw realism and not afraid to show their own ugliness. To me this is the inner strength of Korean film. , A- u p: a/ z# z5 M" `- B

7 [+ V: |# `! a. L* `: ?( }# SI also find most Korean family dramas to be very honest, also...
% o; B/ ^! }- J. P2 b% E2 JI recently saw a Korean 70's based drama where a former cop complains to his college-bound nephew, "I think those rioting students and workers are only helping the communists in doing such things. What if the commies come down here and attack us again?" The drama wasn't afraid to show how brain-washed people were back then, and how such things come from circumstantial situations... from bar girls hoping to go to USA with American soldiers, who's mother illegally sells american products, and younger sister who gets slapped by the bar girl for talking about marrying an American soldier... it was a very honest and interesting drama for me...^^

Adam, I cant beleive you were never in a stylized heroic battle ! 1 Y# j- h0 [& B {' O
Anyway I think that conduct zero and Sex is zero share this same thing about beings comedies that suddenly shift to a dramatic tone. I would say that Save the green planet also have this quality and there are possibly a lot of intresting exemples lke these... it's been one of the intresting things to watch in the recent years0 H. w1 i7 k/ r0 ?. $ W; o" Q5 F1 `7 {% a* w; I I've been interested in seeing this movie, as well as other 80's themed flicks, after someone recommended it. Heard that Ryu Seung-bum and Gong Hyo-jin have great chemistry onscreen; I've enjoyed their acting from their other films. Im Eun-kyung...have to see how she fares. |
