"Natural City - Review"
3 Z4 r$ y [$ p( u
. r. q. Y6 ~; }+ }* }% V I watched Natural City today. The short of it is that it's a film worth watching once, if you're into sci-fi. Anyone else will probably want to skip it, and I'd advise a rental before a purchase.( p. R! O: ~% i r% J$ G/ p
The long of it goes something like this:
/ V; U* l0 V; s- B! B, c8 j8 b; H
8 E/ t$ c: j. E1 |9 ZThis time wants very much to be Bladerunner. The cyberpunk atmosphere is in full effect, and it even has fly-by adverts for off-world colonies, a la Bladerunner. And the rogue cyborgs, a la Bladerunner. And the airborne "cars" flying over the city, a la Bladerunner.
" K. S2 |& P. s: h) G# _ ~2 A4 Q
The emotional center of the film revolves around an MP (similar in all ways to Bladerunner's Bladerunner units) whose job is to hunt down rogue cyborgs, but who is actually in love with a cyborg, Ria, who is near her expiration date. The plot follows his endeavors to circumnavigate that expiration and to live with her. Sounds awfully similar to certain aspects of another film I've seen, called . . . Bladerunner. Except, in Bladerunner, the cyborgs were attempting to reach that end on their own, and Harrison Ford fell in love with his cyborg in the course of the film, rather than being in love with her from the start.$ G8 _' P% Y& C% {' V
- }6 q6 A; n4 W3 w/ y& v7 f
The special effects are oddly imbalanced in the film. They are used to wonderful effect to create atmosphere. On the short end of the stick, however, we have the fight sequences, which are all very boring, poorly editted and which fail to differ in any significant way from one to the next. In addition, the "combat cyborgs" are easily the least impressive looking characters in the entire film. In their younger years, my little brother and his friends once made a ninja movie in our backyard, and the "combat cyborgs" in this film so very closely resemble my brother in their attire that I think they should be paying him royalties. You might think I'm exaggerating this point, but really, I'm not. They're really that bad. And aside from posing and flying around like mannequins, they really don't do much in the way of fighting. In fact, most of the fight scenes boil down to a few brief clips of the "combat cyborgs" flying around, jumping out of the water or grabbing MPs from the ceiling, and then the MPs all shoot each other in confusion.
6 M! }: s7 c; Q) F. _

To the film's credit, however, it does manage to create of very sad and sentimental relationship between Ria and the film's protagonist, R, in his quest to extend her life. You really can't help but feel sorry for them. I really felt sorry for them in a way.5 [0 e# {2 d% l( Y
. \ V2 j6 B/ C6 w: k( P# ?$ D
As for the character of Cyon, she's not very well developed and is used as little more than a plot device to tie the otherwise fragmented shreds of a story into one another. She is the unwitting connection between the film's love story and the diabolical conflict that forms the core of the film's poorly executed action.. ?( Z! E6 Q+ I, J) R
Z: _! U" M# F- O* w0 _3 E9 g
In the end, this film is too much like Bladerunner for its own good, but not good enough to stand its ground against that film, now more than 20 years old. If you liked Bladerunner and need more of the same, then you might find this film interesting in ways. If you're a diehard sci-fi nut, then you should definately check this out.* m1 a4 q0 Q5 H1 }* I3 @
+ D7 w4 i; G( G( Z4 [
But most viewers will likely find little to like in this film. While it's not blatantly offensive to my sensibilities, it doesn't stroke them much, and in the end, I feel very neutral about the entire affair.

Natural City is decent for a one time viewing. I feel no need to own this film, however, for if I want to watch this sort of thing, I'll just pop my Bladerunner into the DVD instead and walk away from it without the mixed feelings that this film incites.0 ^1 Q9 L7 v/ E* Q" ]( w

I haven't seen Blade Runner, perhaps this is why I'm favorably disposed to NC.
# U$ N0 o& T+ [8 `9 s) N9 k# r' hI figure NC is a like it a lot or hate it movie. In that respect it reminds me of SORUM which is hardly scary but nevertheless interesting and rich with subtexual nuances and details. The way I respect Sorum, and even movies like Wonderful Days, is the same for how I respect Natural City. The narrative doesn't feel charged at all and so an audience member wishing to be pushed and pulled Hollywood style wouldn't feel fulfilled at all; but for an introspective guy like me the movie's ulterior richness, its psychological "offness," its overall wretched hopelessness in mood and the music, gives an impression that settles in a way that's appreciable. So, alhough not a great movie, NC is certainly not a stupid movie. I like it a lot.: Z; E8 q. c+ ^( B* Y) U: r! {9 J

But seriously, if you like this sort of stuff, you should most definately check out Bladerunner. I'd go so far to say that it is the single best sci-fi film of the 80s (and probably better than anything from the 90s as well), and the special effects were way ahead of their time. The film holds its own against any modern film in terms of visuals, it has a great storyline and it's got a fantastic cast as well. It was based on the novel by Philip K. Dick (good book), who also wrote the stories upon which Minority Report and Paycheck were based. Bladerunner is easily the best of the films, though. Judging from what you say about the lack of Hollywood pulls and pushes, I think you would also find the pacing of the film quite to your liking.

And after you see Bladerunner, I'm sure you'll agree that NC uses it largely as source material. Or if you see it and disagree, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that as well. So, do check it out; I urge you. You won't be disappointed.

So far, my favorite Korean sci-fi film has been 2009: Lost Memories. I really enjoyed some of the themes of cultural identity, and the way that it incorporated Korea's history into everything. It made it a distinctly Korean sci-fi film and really set it apart from most others, which tend to be fairly culturally ambiguous films. What did you think of that one hwang?6 R0 O6 i: B" B

I haven't received my order from Yesasia so haven't had chance to see Natural City yet. So I appreciate you guys reviews. I want to mention one thing though. I read the Korean movie magazine 'Screen' every month, and remember reading the director of Natural City's interview. He said he DELIBERATELY chose the settings to be very Japanese and Chinese in terms of the style because he wanted to warn us Koreans that this could really happen in the future if we didn't value our identities and accepted whatever that was foreign without any caution. Just want you guys to know that. I read Yu Ji Tae was quite depressed because the film wasn't well received by the public after all the hard works and high expectations and Choi Min Sik was the one who gave him a pat on his shoulder to console him. How nice Yu Ji Tae made up beautifully in Old Boy WITH Choi Miin Sik!
