Girls' Night Out
"Girls' Night Out" is the rather unfortunate translation of a title which couples the phonologically-similar terms for "Ladies'" and "Dinner Party". It was written and directed by first-time director Lim Sang-Soo (not to be confused with Hong Sang-Soo, who directed The Power of Kangwon Province). The film, together with An Affair, opened at the Pusan Film Festival and had its general release during Chusok weekend in September (a major weekend for film releases).
At its core the film combines nicely-paced editing with three women's brash discussions of sexual matters. Its visuals and dialogue caused a stir on its release, mostly for the overt manner in which they were presented. It was termed by some as feminist -- I don't really agree, nonetheless one of my (male) students said, "I didn't like it, but it taught me a little about women."
I read an interesting comment from a reader who compared this film to An Affair. She loved both movies equally, comparing the latter to "sweet Asian wine" and the former to "refreshing (Western) beer." The film does have a Western feel to it, with its Western-styled apartments, its music, and the character who decides to move to France to experience a more open society. It is more likely constructed for a Korean audience, however. It seems designed to shock and therefore force viewers to define their feelings about sex, by introducing topics that aren't usually discussed on the screen or on television. In doing so, perhaps the film will encourage viewers to reshape their attitudes towards themselves and towards others.

Summary: Korean Sex and the City with more to-the-ground characters
I watched this film in Bangkok film festival and was surprised by how explicit it was, storywise and sexwise. The story of this film seems so realistic; lives of 3 twenty something Korean girls who are searching for love. It seems that these women are so obsessed with sex, but aren't we all do? In my opinion, this film portrays the inherent side of most modern Asian women, the side that they only share with their closest female friends, or even with themselves only. They went through loneliness, confusion on how to express their sexual desire, and last of all, finding what they want from life. I don't know, but I felt that the script writer is smart enough to make this piece of film so explicit yet not so overdone that it still feels very real. Big applause to all the actors, they dare to act, and they did it to the level that many professional hollywood actors might be put into shame. Great movie for those who are in the mood for some real-life sexual aspect of women. Sex and the City for Korean, I think.

Summary: A surprising movie
In the first part of the movie, they only talk about sex and it was too straight and too much for me. I understand that it may not be representative of the Korean woman ! They are always with a glass of wine or alcohol in the hand, that may be not representative too. But in the end I liked his sense of humor. There are little jokes every where. The characters became touching as they are sincere and true. There is a little criticize of the Korean culture, a touch of gravity. I didn't like the way he moves the camera : too unstable. But some photo are beautiful and the country surrounding Seoul is beautiful too.
