As for the film itself, well... I think you have to set your expectations to the right level before you see it. In a strange way it reminded me a lot of BICHUNMOO, perhaps because they are both adapted from comic books. Although the film (and comic book) is based on the life of a real person, it isn't really meant to give us a very nuanced portrait. It's more of a straight (Korean) underdog vs. the big (Japanese) bullies extravaganza. Some of it was outright silly in its muscular swaggar, and this film definitely confirms director Yang Yun-ho as having the strangest filmography in modern Korean cinema.
I'm guessing this film will have very little in common with RIKIDOZAN, coming out at the end of the year. Although both are based on ethnic Koreans who become stars in Japan through their fighting abilities, it looks like the directors are taking entirely different approaches. Good for variety's sake, I guess...
