+ S5 K; ]9 K% Q6 {3 g" j
6 Y" x+ M1 X* HIn the film about them taking part in U.S. indie rock music fest Vans Warped Tour, they came off as ‘boys’ who still love to do music and hang out together rather than being the veteran band they actually are. Such playfulness was seen when they made fun of leader Yoon Do-hyun dressed up in a suit to host the fest’s opening ceremony, calling him ‘Director Yoon looking to buy land,’ and in how they constantly laughed while pretending to act as ‘an ambitious heir to a conglomerate and his entourage.’
+ f+ D7 G# }9 e4 n$ q  M- F! k( M) H/ p* S
It is probably the cheerfulness of these ‘adult boys,’ much closer to being vivacious than dark and heavy, that has been the driving force behind their 15-year career.

“I’m just doing what I like to do, I don’t want to judge or make conclusions about myself.” This was the response given by Kim Soo-chul, winner of the Jecheon Film Music Award at this year’s 6th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival, when asked if he thinks of himself as a rocker. There are people like him - great men who cannot be defined by a single concept. That is why the following interview does not express who he is in his entirety. But you will be able to presume how big of a person he is inside.

Kim Soo-chul: I’m honored. I’ve won at the Daejong Film Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards before but I would like to express my gratitude as a musician for receiving this sort of award at a music and film festival.

z* G7 x* W# ?1 F+ u  q$ cKim: You need to study into other genres to do film music because for example, the music for a historical drama and love story has to be different, right? And that way, you can do whatever it is that the director needs. It becomes an opportunity to study a deep and wide range of music.$ m. q% {4 q6 B

10: Is that how you got into film music?, \. e) I# I: J& M) H$ a, `$ U$ N
Kim: At first it was just because I liked it. I made a short film after saving up money with my friends. And that’s when we did the music for the film. That’s also when I first studied Korean traditional music. And for fun, we once submitted a film to a French film festival for teenagers but it made it to the finals. That’s when I realized I should use Korean music for film music and it sparked my curiosity to study it.

[JIMFF] Lee Byung-woo says "always on main character's side"

7 C% T  s9 H6 x* w4 U' n9 \There is film music that lasts in one’s memories for as long as or longer than the movie itself. Most such music are regarded masterpieces and in that sense, the film music that guitarist Lee Byeong-woo has made are worthy of joining the ranks of masterpieces. But his music will arouse one’s memory of a scene from a movie rather than let it become forgotten.7 J- P" f5 C# |* [

By “making music as someone always siding with the main character” with the hope that “people will regard movies warmly,” Yoo-rim’s (played by Park Hae-il) shameless love in “Purpose of Love” is depicted as being cute and young while the clowns in “King and the Clown” are portrayed in an even more sad and sympathetic light. That is why for Lee’s work, music and film are one. Just like the scenes that emerged in the interviewer’s mind as he played the melody to the soundtrack from “Purpose of Love” on his guitar.

[JIMFF] Meet rock legends at Jecheon

' b2 G, X1 T1 v3 B$ bThere was a time when rock was legendary. New rock bands emerged from here and there, they made amazing albums, and they were in line with the public and critics tastes. Every young person idolized The Beatles and Hippism, which cried out for love and peace with music by rock musicians, settled as the trend of those times. The colossal change that rock music brought to young culture in mainly England and the United States in the 1960s, led the flow of pop culture around the world in the 20th century, and the aftershock from it exists till today. But starting with the Woodstock Festival in 1969, the era of the legend ended. As bands started to make huge profits, they became dinosaur bands which makes their decisions based on business, and the rock spirit moved toward emphasizing pleasure rather than resistance or social participation.: R( \8 Q0 Y: }7 x

# J" Q) h5 K' F% `" E5 n' O$ BThe music documentaries shown at the 6th Jecheon International Film & Music Festival is about the choices that rock bands make after the times rock was legendary. When Pink Floyd produced album-of-the-century “Darkside of the Moon,” instead of showing the rough sounds of rocks bands or going to concert halls, he started to create a sound, one by one, at a studio as if an engineer. That was the start to the possibility that rock will be able to break free from its original format of being a band and branch out to many forms. On the other side was The Doors who instilled the basic instinct of human psyche into a combination of the blues and psychedelic. And with his surreal lyrics and controversial stage manners, Jim Morrison crossed between pornography and literature. “Doors: The Doors” is a record of the historical start to The Doors. And in documentary “Stones in Exile,” the Rolling Stones meet a turning point in their career after leaving to France in the midst of being involved in all sorts of scandals, and produce their best masterpiece “Exile on the Main Street.” The story of legends and truths, identity and development, and rock bands which had find a way to move forward in some way or another. These films will be true recordings of those times.

Of the directors that made it into the ‘Korean Music Film Now’ section of the 6th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival, Ku Hye-sun is probably the most well-recognized.  x4 @+ n3 R6 ?- K& e, ~

This actress, who is so versatile that she has also published a book, held an art exhibition, does music and has even taken on the challenge of making a movie which is considered the most comprehensive form of art, is the reason why she is envied quite so often.0 f( `" N; t3 K2 O' H- y0 f

But she is someone who puts her love for the artistic genres before talent. “’Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ from ‘Conspiracy Theory’ is a classic. And ‘The Way You look tonight’ from ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ is one of my favorite songs,” she says excitedly purely from a fan’s point-of-view as she talks about film music from movies starring Julia Roberts, an actress she likes.

Of the various talents she has, such affection and respect are probably the greatest and most important.

[JIMFF] Fest dir. Cho Sung-woo says JIMFF stronger this year

2 t7 p; |) q% k, u5 n* |
Festival Director Cho Sung-woo could be called the “A to Z” of the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival (JIMFF). The efforts he has put into managing the JIMFF since its second year has helped make abundant both the number and quality of films screened and performances put on every year, and slowly yet surely, JIMFF's brand has started to become remembered by the public. That is why this interview with him is the shortcut to understanding present day JIMFF.
7 f  _* \& Z$ t. S2 C/ ]! q; b" y5 V
10: Singer Lee Moon-sae’s performance on the 14th was a huge hit. Many Jecheon citizens took part in it.* p( [7 q; Z! `2 Y7 T
Cho Sung-woo: The sentiment of people from this area versus young people here for the film festival are very different. But Lee Moon-sae is a universal singer. I think it went well because he’s someone that men and women of all ages like.
% q  o1 K8 ]' z5 ^* j& r7 D
D+ _* r" h" W( q10: Like so, it must be important to fulfill the needs of both Jecheon citizens and people visiting from outside for the film festival. But in that sense, the JIMFF's red carpet was less eye-catching for the public or press.
2 F& M3 G7 }# ~& [- nCho: I think we paid a little less attention to inviting local stars because we had many guests from overseas for the Asia-Pacific Producers Network (APN) meeting. But we invited most of the directors and actors for the movies screened and I think they should own the film festival. Just like how 1st generation jazz musicians from “Bravo! Jazz Life” took to the stage of the opening ceremony. I think it’s only right that film festivals be that way.
1 N! |$ t6 W8 ?3 c- D% X- l$ O$ f) p& W0 q4 a! t! M# G( u, Z
10: It’s an issue of substance then. Are you confident about it?# k+ s5 n" ?. V+ o# q
Cho: I think this year’s JIMFF was better than last year’s in terms of film programming. It became stronger as a music and film festival. And it seems quite evident that Jecheon has become a special place for musicians in the indie scene ? there are bands that keep coming. This has become a table where movie people and musicians can communicate. From conventional standards, things may seem quieter than last year but I see it the film fest itself as a huge success.
* S) v% |7 N4 A, d
4 w7 E3 \, |5 _5 ?0 \7 _  Y9 o4 \$ b10: Indeed, it seems everything has accumulated bit by bit to create tangible history.
3 y8 h/ \8 q2 W0 F& i. P! hCho: That’s why we have different artists perform for “One Summer Night” every year. We’re trying to broaden the spectrum of our film festival while having a consistency. We maintain consistency with the trailer as well but have them made in omnibus format by reputable directors., s# P: l8 i) K

: m; F, `6 P$ y& O2 u; X10: It’s completely opposite from being all show and no substance.* X( j0 N* i+ E0 L6 L) g# v0 c
