Well, those expecting a kid-friendly cameo from the likes of Chim-Chim in the Wachowski-supervised Ninja Assassin can begin sobbing. JoBlo got its digital mitts on two new photos—one extra bloody—from the martial arts actioner from director James McTeigue (V For Vendetta). Seen here is the Michael Jackson of Korean pop (or so I’m told over and over), Rain, who stars as the lead in the film, a renegade ninja looking to slash it up against his former clan and avenge the death of a friend. I was expecting less carnage from this picture, but Rain looks like he’s ready to challenge Tong Po from Kickboxer ‘89 to a death match. The film opens Jan ‘09.

      I’m willing to forget Speed Racer and am awaiting Ninja Assasin with anticipation.
      After all these guys made the Matrix… another martial arts film should be sweet.

The fine Canucks at JoBlo* have scored the exclusive first look at images from James "I swear I directed this, not the Wachowski Bros" McTeigue's new film, Ninja Assassin. They have two pics, one of which you see here. Rain, huge Korean star, co-star of Speed Racer and major nemesis of Stephen Colbert, is looking both ripped and torn in this pic. If you click through to JoBlo you can get a gander at his swords.

JoBlo also has some information on the film that's new... to me, at least. According to them, Ninja Assassin takes place in the modern day: The movie features Rain as trained killer Raizo, who breaks from his ninja clan after they execute his friend. While Raizo plots revenge, a Europol agent (the lovely Naomie Harris) investigates the clan's handiwork and gets caught up in the middle.

I thought for sure this was a period movie. So it's the new Enter the Ninja, huh? Sho Kosugi is in this one too. I think you have to cast Sho if you're making a ninja flick. Some kind of international treaty.

Comic-Con Preview: Watchmen, Ninjas and...Paris?

Today's the day, fanboys (and girls). San Diego Comic-Con, the world's biggest comic-book convention and pop-culture expo, opens tonight with an expected crowd of more than 120,000.

And that's not counting invaders from Hollywood, with the studios aggressively parading their early footage, news and stars. Fans—if they can get into the packed halls—will be the first with scoop on geek-fave flicks Watchmen, Terminator Salvation and Ninja Assassin, plus Lost, Heroes and new shows from J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon. All that and more Seth Rogen, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Smith than you can shake a lightsaber at.

Heck, Paris Hilton is even rumored to crash the panel for her movie Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Korean pop sensation Rain is, like, a ninja assassin, in this Wachowski bros-produced martial-arts flick. He'll be at the Con, but seriously: Has there ever been a better name for a movie?

Entertainment Weekly recently published a gallery of photos in anticipation of this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, where studios will unveil photos, footage and other information from various geek-related genre movies. Among them: Ninja Assassin, directed by James McTeigue, produced by the Wachowski Brothers, and starring South Korea's pop superstar savior, Rain. That's him above, looking like he's had a very bad day.

We know a few things about the movie so far. We know that it may or may not be the long-awaited big screen adaptation of the anime film Ninja Scroll. We know that veteran comics/screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski took a shot at draft of the script (and apparently wrote the damn thing in 53 hours). We know that Rick Yune was cast back in May as Rain's rival. We know that Sung Kang and Sho Kosugi are also in the movie.

We don't know, however, if it's going to be any good. The Wachowski Brothers, once considered the best thing to happen to Hollywood after films like Bound and The Matrix, have sort of floundered in recent years. Speed Racer flopped hard, and turned out to be a poor launching pad for what was supposed to be Rain's crossover party. Could Ninja Assassin be the Wachowski's last chance to redeem themselves? Will it be the big stateside splash that Rain has been waiting for? I don't know. But any movie featuring a bloody, barefoot guy holding two big-ass swords is worth taking a look at, in my book.

"Speed Racer" may have bombed in the box office, but that doesn't mean the Wachowski Brothers are down for the count. They're back with a brand new film called "Ninja Assassin," which focuses on—you guessed it—a ninja assassin.

JoBlo.com has pictures from the flick, and as can be expected, it looks pretty badass. Check out Korean pop sensation Rain as Raizo, the titular assassin, covered in a lot of blood and holding two swords. You can also see Naomie Harris as a Europol agent investigating a clan of ninjas. She's not as badass as Raizo, but she's wearing Wachowski trademark leather, so you can bet that she'll eventually do some somersaults and dodge a bunch of bullets and stuff.

Ninja Badassery

I keep telling people that if Hollywood decides to give the ninja genre a real attempt, it could make millions of dollars. I'm not talking about Tom Cruise playing with swords or Tarantino paying homage to kung fu flicks. Think ninjas meets Matrix, The Professional, and throw in a little Heat and you've got a recipe for a great movie.

Well, the Wachowskis took notice and are teaming back up with James McTeigue (their director for V for Vendetta). They're just producers, so it probably won't suck like Matrix 2 and 3 (or from what I hear, Speed Racer). *keeping fingers crossed* Maybe they can get their form back and produce something like V for Vendetta again. As of right now, this looks very promising!! Ninja Assassin is due out this January. (......)

Highlights for you on this journey so far?

We have all been blessed on our Freerun journey. A big step for us was hooking up with Scott Rangers and GO Stunts. He and his team have given us many opportunities to showcase our skills in the film industry. Gabe and Paul have doubled for Adam Sandler in his new movie 'Don't mess with the Zohan'. Rich has choreographed Freerunning sequences in the latest Wachowski Brothers film 'Ninja Assassin. Victor was lucky enough to go Freerunning around the world with Madonna and has done commercials for the likes of Mazda and K-Swiss.

A few minutes ago I posted a new stil from the possesion flick UNBORN. That still, along with several others within the last 24 hours, came from Entertainement Weekly.

And low and behold we've got yet another new still for you all today! This one also comes from... shocker... Entertainment Weekly and is from the ninja flick NINJA ASSASSIN. You can scope it out above.

The still features Rain as a battered and disgruntled Raizo. He's looking very badass. Like badass in the sense of 'Oh-shit-someone's-gonna-die.' What more do you want from a flick called NINJA ASSASSIN? I'm sold!

The issue also has another look at the Wachowski Brothers’ upcoming “Ninja Assassin” with South Korean pop singer Rain in the leading role. Here’s the pic — Yup, it looks like it’s raining blood. On rain. At least I think that’s Rain. Hard to tell with all the, you know, blood. But since it’s one of the first official pics from the film, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the powers that be will want to showcase their leading man instead of some extra.

If you've seen our Spirit story, you'll know that EW have a boatload of brilliant pictures as part of the Comic-Con preview. Here's another, from the Wachowskis' next flick, Ninja Assassin.

And if all that blood and those two Katanas are to be believed, Assassin will be worlds away from Speed Racer's candy covered saccharine sweetness.

CON Preview: The Spirit, Star Trek, Terminator and More!

And finally in this round of the Con preview, we have another film from the folks at Warner Bros. Announced a while back and generating the “Ninjas are cool, so this must be cool, too” sort of buzz, Ninja Assassin is the second team-up between The Wachowski Brothers as producers and director James McTeigue — the previous being V for Vendetta. This time around they are back taking on the story of a young ninja (played by Korean pop star Rain) who turns his back on the orphanage that raised him, leading to a confrontation with a fellow ninja from his clan. And as you can see from the picture to the right, it appears to be a bloody affair. I don’t know about you, but the whole “Ninjas are cool…” argument should be plenty good enough to get me interested in this flick.

What do we expect at the Con? Director James McTeigue and uber-producer Joel Silver will be on hand, along with Rain and co-star Naomie Harris, for the Dark Castle presentation in Hall H on Thursday at 6:00pm. Most likely we will be seeing a little bit of footage from the film, but we also expect to see someone get taken out by a stealthy ninja.

SDCC preview pics

EW.com, has a good little photo feature on next weeks comic con in San Diego, featuring some 28 photos. I'd recommend you browse through all their pics here. These are previews of pics and posters that should show up next week but are hitting the webernets a bit early.

The two that stand out the most to me are Christian Bale as John Connor from Terminator Salvation, and Korean pop sensation Rain covered in blood from the set of the Wachowskis bros film, Ninja Assassin. Very nice.
