Fantastic Fest 2010: THE MAN FROM NOWHERE Review
by Todd Brown, September 23, 2010

With 2006 feature Cruel Winter Blues director Lee Jeong-Beom made his pitch to be considered Korea's answer to Takeshi Kitano, blending gangster tropes with a meditative arthouse style. With 2010 blockbuster The Man From Nowhere Lee serves notice that he's got some John Woo in him, too, and though only two films into his career Lee has clearly established himself as one of the leaders of Korea's young generation.

Won Bin - you know him from Tae Guk Gi and Mother - stars as Cha Tae-Sik, a reclusive man with a dark past, a man who spends his days closeted away in a dingy apartment behind the pawn shop he runs, generally avoiding any contact with humanity. The one intrusion - one he welcomes, albeit gruffly - is the young girl who lives upstairs, the neglected daughter of a drug addict who clearly sees the taciturn pawn broker as a kindred spirit thanks to their shared outsider status.

The pair are an unlikely duo but a genuine one. They share meals. The girl stays in Cha's apartment when her mother is strung out. Cha allows her to paint his nails. But just as it seems that Cha's defenses are about to fall, the unthinkable happens. The girl's mother has foolishly gotten involved in a plan to rob a local dealer, a dealer who quickly tracks his stolen goods back to her and to Cha's pawnshop. Mother and daughter are kidnapped, mother killed, and it is up to an increasingly frantic and driven Cha to save the young girl.

Important point: A major part of Cha's hidden history are the years spent working as an assassin for the Korean secret service. This is not a man you want to make angry. And he is very angry indeed.

Laced with black humor and some truly impressive action sequences, The Man From Nowhere is a quietly building slow burn of a film, one that arrives at a point of bleak ultraviolence so subtly that you hardly realize you've gotten there at all until the knives and guns come out and the blood sprays across the screen and you're left thinking, "Oh, of course. That makes perfect sense." Writer-director Lee is clearly a student of the heroic bloodshed film and though his picture is arguably a touch longer than it needs to be with a script more convoluted than it needs to be and with certain elements that are a touch overly familiar, his command of character and genre conventions make this the best, most satisfying entry in the genre from any nation since A Bittersweet Life.

Anchoring the entire picture on all levels is the charismatic Won Bin, an actor who started as a soap opera heart throb and who has now proven himself as both a character actor of depth and a potent action hero. Korea has long been in need of a handsome leading man with range beyond Lee Byun-hyung and in Won Bin they have him. Despite playing with minimal dialogue, Won's presence smolders on the screen in quiet moments and is one hundred percent believable in the action set pieces, the finale knife fight in particular - a sequence that plays with only ambient sound so you can hear the fighters grunt and strain against one another - standing as one of the best conceived and executed action moments of the year.

Though not without its flaws - beyond those already mentioned, Lee sometimes struggles with camera placement and editing to maximize the impact of his action - The Man From Nowhere is one of those rare things: A blockbuster that became one because it deserves to be.

Massawyrm says the awesome MAN FROM NOWHERE is the South Korean MAN ON FIRE
Published on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 6:33am

Hola all. Massawyrm here.

As many long time readers know, I’m a huge fan of Tony Scott’s badass 2004 paternal revenge film MAN ON FIRE – a raw, seething tale of a man with nothing, who finds a reason to live again thanks to a little girl put in his charge, only to watch that girl kidnapped before his eyes, setting him on a mission to fuck up everyone who was ever even tangentially involved in her abduction. So I was absolutely tickled to see that the South Koreans took a stab at making their own version of the film by ratcheting up the violence, tension and overall menace of the story in the box office hit MAN FROM NOWHERE. Those familiar with MAN ON FIRE will recognize its structure almost immediately as it follows a similar track – almost beat for beat – laying down its own version of ass whopping against a similarly dark organization.

The film focuses upon a dark stranger who the locals refer to as the “Pawnshop Ghost”, a guy who rarely speaks and runs a low rent pawn business in the poor part of town. This man’s neighbor is a junkie exotic dancer with a spunky but adorable 8-year-old daughter in dire need of a father figure. The little girl hounds the stranger to the point of nuisance, but as the film goes on, he can’t help but be heartbroken by her situation, demeanor and desperate pleas for help. And when her mother crosses the wrong people, thugs show up to abduct the mother and daughter, right in front of this dark, brooding stranger who has tried very hard not to give a shit. Then, as the girl cries out for him to save her, he begins to realize just how important she’s become to him. When he discovers she’s been thrown into a pool of children whose organs are being harvested for the black market, he loses his shit and sets out to kill everyone who might be involved in the girl’s abduction and subsequent harvesting. You can assume the kind of carnage that comes next.

Unlike MAN ON FIRE, MAN FROM NOWHERE spends a good amount of time with the cops tracking both the organization committing the horrendous crimes as well as the movements and crimes of the stranger – whom they suspect of somehow being involved with the gang. As his motives begin to deviate wildly from the organizations, they become the source of our exposition into who this man is, why he is acting the way does and just how far he is willing to go.

While this film feels an awful lot like its predecessor, there are a number of things that are wildly different about it, making it a very much worth seeking out. The violence for one is radically different. Denzel’s menace was that he was incredibly smart and lured each man out separately before torturing the information out of him. The Pawnshop Ghost is more of an investigator who gets the information himself and gets into ruthless, bloody martial arts fights, gunfights and foot-chases that are more the style of Asian cinema than those with America sensibilities. It is positively furious, with a number of high octane, rapid fire, action set-pieces that never fail to deliver. Meanwhile, it has a dastardly sense of dark humor, the likes of which we’ve really begun to see come out of the post-Park South Korea.

However, South Korean film has a tendency to run a little long, eschewing the shorthand American films have perfected and instead carefully developing and explaining everything that is happening. Even the very best South Korean films tend to leave American audiences wishing it had been trimmed by 10, 15 or even 20 minutes. MAN FROM NOWHERE is the first South Korean film in quite some time that I’ve seen that operates at a breakneck, relentless speed, never taking the time rest and allowing us to only briefly catch our breath before exploding again into fits of carefully orchestrated mayhem, martial arts and vicious revenge.

Everything about this film works, especially its emotional through-line that makes you really care for this delightfully obnoxious little urchin and the detached stranger she clings to so desperately; it is surprising how well their few small, quiet moments together really make you want to watch him beat the living shit out of anyone who has touched so much as a hair on her head. MAN FROM NOWHERE gave me a broad smile about 20 minutes in and refused to wipe it from my face for the entirety of the runtime. It immediately became my very favorite film of the festival as well as one of my favorites of the year. Asian film fans and action fans in general owe it to themselves to seek this movie out at their earliest opportunity. An incredibly bad ass foray into paternal instinct revenge, this is one of those films that pays off again and again –eliciting 4 or 5 applause points from the audience for its audacity and inventiveness - and may well be the very best action film of the year. See this as soon as possible.

Until next time friends,
Massawyrm

李正范好风光啊

Movie Review: The Man From Nowhere

[30/09/2010] Last week, we reported that Korea’s 2010 blockbuster hit movie, “The Man From Nowhere", would be making a nationwide release in America. On September 28th, I attended a press-screening at the CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles, California, where I was able to see Korean heartthrob, actor Won Bin, on the big screen for his emotional action movie.

In “The Man From Nowhere”, Won Bin stars as Taesik, a mysterious pawnshop owner who has secluded himself from the world after having lost his pregnant wife in a tragic accident. While the socially awkward pawnshop owner tries to live life avoiding as much human contact as possible, he is reluctantly encountered by the troubled little girl-next-door named Somi (played by child actress, Kim Sae Ron). As Somi makes her regular visits to bother Taesik, she becomes the one person in the world that can soften Taesik’s hardened heart.

While we may wish for the movie to continue on with the happy vibe, the meat of the movie begins as Somi’s heroin addict mother interferes in a drug dealer’s operation by stealing an important shipment of heroin, which eventually leads to the kidnapping of her daughter and herself. Taesik’s secret past is slowly unveiled as he sets out on a violent adventure to save his one and only friend, and he has “nothing to lose, nothing to compromise.”

Although this was Won Bin’s first action film, he didn’t fail to deliver all of the intricate and detailed fight choreography. I was even more impressed when I learned that Won Bin completed all of his own stunts and fight scenes, rejecting the director’s offer for a stunt double. The only lacking part I found in this movie was that the English subtitles left out and mistranslated a handful lines in the film, which possibly made the script a bit awkward for non-Korean speakers. Regardless, the movie was a great film that incorporated intense knife and gun fights with Won Bin’s and Kim Sae Ron’s captivating performances of the two emotionally complicated outcasts . I’m not much of an enthusiast of bloody action movies, but let’s just say I’ll be returning to watch this movie once more later this week.

“The Man From Nowhere” will premiere this Thursday, September 30th at 11:55pm at the CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles premiere will be the first of many releases to be made in theaters across the US and Canada. The distribution schedule is as follows:

9/30: Los Angeles (CGV Cinemas)

10/8: Cerritos (Regal)

10/15: Torrance (AMC Rolling Hills 20), Garden Grove (Regal), Arcadia (AMC Santa Anita 16), Flushing (AMC Bay Terrace 6), Manhattan (AMC Empire 25), New Jersey (AMC Ridgefield Park 12), Maryland (AMC Rios 18), Seattle (Cinemark Century 16 & AMC Alderwood 16), San Jose (AMC Cupertino 16), Atlanta (AMC Discover Mills 18), Chicago (AMC Northbrook 14 & AMC Showplace Niles 12), Dallas (AMC Grapevine Mills 30), Austin (Alamo), Toronto (AMC Younge & Dundas 24)

10/29: Honolulu (Ward)

Vancouver International Film Festival 2010: The Man from Nowhere

by Sean Axmaker on October 4th, 2010 at 9:30 pm in Festivals
[This post is cross-published at Parallax View.]

This slick South Korean underworld thriller is not a transcendent action film in any way, but in the realm of humorless South Korean action conventions it’s well constructed, suitably dark and dangerous and filled with well-honed, visceral scenes. And it didn’t hurt to see the film in a theater packed with a target audience you rarely share the experience with. I don’t mean American male action fans, but young South Korean women with an affection for its matinee idol start, Won Bin (most recently, he played the son in Bong Joon-ho’s Mother). The ooohs emanated from all parts of the theater (but especially the front rows) when Won makes his entrance, playing an emotionally distant pawn shop proprietor behind a lock of hair artfully falling over his right eye. Then again when we get the first flashback of Won, heretofore nameless, as the highly-trained government agent Cha Tae-chik, a super-spy with mad skills and a military haircut. And, of course, when we get our first shirtless scene of the dreamy, tortured hero, when he’s pulled back into the world he fled years before to save a little girl from the heartless criminals who add to the drug-dealing coffers with a sideline in black market organs and child slavery.

There are fiercely dedicated young cops on the trail of the drug ring, ruthlessly violent criminal gangs at war over the drug trade, a single mom nightclub dancer on the needle who rips off the mob, and her adorably spunky young daughter who manages to keep her spirit in the face of all the misery around her and refuses to give up on the enigmatic pawn shop man, her only friend in the world. When she’s kidnapped by the Chinese gangs muscling into the drug trade, that’s the last straw and the killing machine of old is back, and he’s not content to just kill these gang members. He punishes them, making sure they suffer before they die, sometimes slowly, always painfully.

Director Lee Jeong-Beom puts it all in the twilight of the underworld, mostly at night, often in dungeon-like interiors of abandoned buildings and slum hovels, always in the shadows. The cops here aren’t corrupt, but they can be brutal, and are remarkably out of the loop despite all the resources at their disposal. They know more about the Cha, despite the military lock on his record, than they do about the criminal organization they have been shadowing for months, and while they get in his way, they are no more than an inconvenience for the one-man army. The rest is predictable stuff, from an icy assassin with a touch of humanity about him to the colorful psychos who dress flashy and laugh at their brutality until Cha comes around to exact retribution. But it is pretty damn slick, suitably grim and just a little cute, thanks to the innocent adoration of a little girl waiting for a hero to save the day.
