) i0 A5 K) |& B" ?& V7 H- b: l: t: @, h1 i
A& P( w) a- _+ P3 F' Z. x

9 @% n: ?; x$ t3 _8 N
For some, the gap between cheers and fears is wide. But for South Korean director Kim Jee-woon, going from making his audience laugh in films such as The Foul King to making them cower with fear in his latest film A Tale Of Two Sisters was a natural and gradual progression. * b& @1 I( H- P) y0 }8 g! g1 t
* l8 S' x4 l$ o
Director Kim Jee-woon retells an old tale with style. Picture by Dickson Lee.
7 C9 p& U3 R. E; h4 O) F/ k! @6 K' K3 t
"I've never really liked comedy, but then I was asked to direct The Quiet Family, which was a pretty dark comedy. I thought I could improve on it so I took on The Foul King," says Kim, ensconced in the Dynasty Suite at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Wan Chai. "When The Foul King was successful, there was no challenge in the genre for me any more. That's why I wanted another genre to work with."   m' a& j4 L1 w3 j2 ~/ u. L$ w

; g; o1 V: ?9 u3 `( k         The move away from comedy was a natural choice for the 39-year-old self-confessed horror buff who cites Alfred Hitchcock among his greatest influences. ' ?4 V* B( H! M" B* X! |2 ^% w# u

- k5 r+ P- E4 y5 t- G         A Tale Of Two Sisters was adapted from an ancient Korean folk tale about two siblings killed by their cruel stepmother's son. They return as ghosts to plead with the gods of the netherworld for justice. ( q" E7 _. V5 e  `1 z" C

R3 G9 B2 d" p* F" {5 p5 @         In Kim's version, the two sisters - Su-mi (Im Soo-jung) and Su-yeon (Moon Geun-young) - return home from an unexplained illness to find their home and their stepmother (Yeom Jeung-a) even more bizarre than before. As the real tale unravels, so too do the lives of the people who live there.
7 L  ~" I; T# I0 H6 O8 |' ]) G% S7 f6 k9 B7 h4 u9 u
The old Korean tale had been adapted for the screen five times before, but Kim wanted to give it a modern twist. "There are contemporary versions of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet such as West Side Story, which gave me the idea. The previous versions had only set out to capture the horror of the tale and the cruelty of the stepmother. I wanted my version to be scary, but I wanted to capture the beauty and sadness as well," he explains. 3 m4 |, r2 J2 @' q

% b" r/ K& r9 L- N1 n: H' q         A Tale Of Two Sisters is a visual feast. As he did with The Quiet Family, Kim creates a cloying atmosphere through a series of shots of empty rooms and long corridors. In The Quiet Family - a quirky tale about a family's attempt to start taking in lodgers only to have the guests commit suicide - scenes accentuate the emptiness of the lodge. In A Tale Of Two Sisters, the desolate shots work to build the suspense and sense of foreboding that hangs heavily in the air of the deserted house.
9 }& B! X1 c# c" hIm Soo-jung (left) and Moon Geun-young play the tragic siblings. Picture by Dickson Lee
. S& R/ y& x. l; f% u- e1 w+ x, R( n  L
Kim says the photo-montage feel was a subconscious effect. "Maybe it's because I'm usually slow to warm up and I don't show a lot of emotion. Somehow that facet of my character must have reflected in the movie. Maybe next time I'll try to move things faster," he says. - R9 i0 k! X; j& J
, q1 y: J  X- o$ a0 A
Dysfunctional families are another point of interest for Kim. "For 10 years before I became a director, I had no vocation. I spent a lot of time at home with the family. A lot of things happened that gave me inspiration. A family has to love together, yet each family member needs their own space. I started thinking about the possibility of scary events that could come out of these situations," he says.
% K8 p2 d: K7 F& `. I# f& K3 o5 O- V9 n4 N1 B: `! ]. g
Those years produced the screenplays for The Quiet Family which marked the big-screen debut of the Seoul-born former stage actor and stage director. It won the top prize at the Portugal Fantasporto Film Festival and was an official selection at the Berlin International Film Festival. 4 ~3 m% _  Z' L' e  x$ I

' \& N6 ^7 r3 w+ u9 k         He then wrote and directed The Foul King - about a banker who seeks to escape the bullying of his colleagues by learning how to wrestle - which topped the Korean box office chart for six months in 2000. 9 {% [, n, _' B

( v+ ~! R5 }; |         After completing a vampire-themed comedy for an internet omnibus by three Korean directors, Kim took the helm for the Korean chapter of the pan-Asian triptych, Three, working with Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho-sun and Thai director Nonzee Nimibutr.
0 r0 V  }' k3 p+ c7 c$ n% r$ m! d5 V" R# N
         Just as The Foul King was Kim's attempt to hone his comic storytelling, the director sees A Tale Of Two Sisters as him fine-tuning the horror chops he first exercised on Memories (his contribution to Three).   E' o. \. T7 e: a! @( m- {

/ u  h/ _: _: j& e1 w  H         "Memories was too short. With someone as slow to warm as myself, 30 minutes was only just enough for me to warm up. It was hard to achieve what I really wanted to do," Kim says with a laugh. ( y0 \8 U3 i4 P: i. b

3 A" |9 n9 y' _9 a          With A Tale Of Two Sisters - for which Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG paid US$1 million for the remake rights - Kim should feel a greater satisfaction.
' W1 J3 x, H' G( E: t
, m' @) R4 B" Q, Z; S          Not only has he managed to capture the poignant beauty and sheer horror of the story, he also gives enough scares to have horror fans screaming for more.
0 f$ s+ `7 g. a* a& N7 s) D. \0 ?% c4 _, u; r
But Kim is still looking to improve on the genre. "The best horror films have to have a lot of suspense - it's just a pervasive foreboding in the heart. And then, like all good Hollywood films, you have to give the audience a shock at regular intervals. I think this has worked in A Tale Of Two Sisters. : ~0 p/ k! q( s. C

! F# y( }) A1 X1 s          "If I get another chance, I want to have just one major shock and have that last throughout."

Just as she was about to untie the bag of body, her stepmother came in with a pot of boiling water, about to pour it onto her. They fought, and Su-mi won. Somehow the scene was quite distorted. And Su-mi found another bag of body in another room - I think a lot of viewers would have thought probably her father was in it. Then Su-mi was attacked by her stepmother again. Father brought home a woman - which is the stepmother. Mother was very upset of her husband's infidelity. She killed herself in Su-yeon's closet. Her daughter opened the closet and it fell, killing her as well. Stepmother discovered their death, she stopped Su-mi from entering the room, telling her she would regret it, which she did. Actually I wonder why neither stepmother nor Su-mi rushed to help them when they saw the falling cupboard and a squashed little girl... why har? After her traumatic experience, Su-mi went mad (schizophrenic to be precise). She was kept in an asylum until she returned home with her father one day. Here, there was scenes which showed the car door opening, and only Su-mi came out (the previous scene had both sisters). Throughout the show, Su-mi had hallucinations about the evil stepmother, when in fact, she was the stepmother all along. The father only talked to stepmother, which is her, and ignored the two sisters, especially Su-yeon, cause she is non-existent. Froggy said father only called Su-mi's name and not Su-yeon. the person is actually Su-mi. Froggy said Stepmother wasn't around in the house at all - this I am not sure. It was purely Su-mi's own hallucinations, and she also had paranoid delusions of stepmother trying to harm Su-mi. So Su-mi was sent back to the asylum by her parents. Well, the viewers should have guessed, because right from the beginning, there was a scene about a psychiatrist interviewing one of the sisters - Su-mi and asked her what it was that happened "on that day".
