5 K1 D7 z3 O9 i$ a( tPlum blossoms is a coming of age movie for two young boys in a small town - who then go onto university. One falls in love with their teacher and another causes a fellow student to committ suicide. It is a story about sex and love -about the relationship between the two - and about the scars that we carry from our childhood into our relationships in later life. It is about how the people who are hurt in relationships end up hurting other people. And how in the end we have a choice to either succumb to these hurts and give in - or to embrace life. The two protagonists mirror one another where one inflicts hurt and one has been hurt by love.

The pacing was slow and has many of the characteristics of the Korean melodrama. And although some of the scenes are played for laughs there is an underlying sadness underpinning the whole movie. Our memories are real and have and underlying power over us. It reminded me of "A Bungee Jump of their own" (and not only because of the lead) in terms of pacing and feel - but a lighter version. Would also be interested to know if Bae Boo Na used a body double - it seems that for some of the more explicit shots you cannot see her head. Although she seems to be quite comfortable with the nudity.2 ^/ m! H; K7 d- f- N0 `

Plum Blossom is primarily about two schoolmates, Se-in and Jay-ho, and their transformation to manhood from the naivete associated with the late teens. Jay-ho is at first very shy about sex, but after his first very emotionally draining experience, he comes to treat sex in a very physical and emotionless manner. Se-in, on the other hand, falls in love with an older woman and seems incapable of accepting the reality that there can be no relationship between the two; his love for the woman pre-empts any deep feelings from developing with any other girls his age.

9 N" m) j- a0 f8 i) ^Within this basic premise, the film follows the two young men from high school to college, and it follows their exploits and heartbreaks along the way. The movie manages to tell a pretty fascinating story about two very realistic, albeit different, guys. As their friendship deepens, a very tight, and genuinely touching bond develops between the two. Their closeness is so believable that there are many moments you almost expect them (or even root for them) to start making love to one another rather than the women they have such little emotional regard for. In fact, there is a homo-erotic undercurrent running throughout the film, both in terms of the relationship between the two males and in the way their bodies are sensually filmed. Se-in even at one point states to his friend that they are essentially one person living in two separate bodies.

Instead it continues on to a more dramatic climax, which I think took away a bit of the film's charm. Nevertheless, Plum Blossom is an intriguing and different take on the growing up theme and is well worth checking out.

A first-love story that extends into an examination of sexual confusion among youngsters on the cusp of their 20s, "Plum Blossom" is hardly the soupy melodrama signaled by its exotic English title. Enlivened by yards of realistic, but not graphic, sack activity, it's a part-lively, part-sad movie, well shot, that's let down by a so-so script. Pic continues South Korean cinema's growing rep for full-on, sexually-themed fare.

9 y$ H8 v/ b! ~; M) \* nHigh school senior Ja-hyo (Kim Rae-weon) is seduced at his new school by classmate Ha-ra (Yun Ji-hye), who eventually commits suicide when he ignores her. Unable to form lasting attachments to women, he subsequently hooks up with perky nurse Nam-ok (Bae Du-na), but she's not about to let him slide away so easily. Meanwhile, Ja-hyo's pal, Su-in (Kim Jeong-hyeon), has developed a crush on his teacher, Jeong-hye (Jin Heui-kyeong), that's socially taboo. Bae has real presence as the spunky, working-class nurse with an equally no-nonsense mother, and Jin (from "Girls' Night Out") brings a serene maturity to the teacher. However, dialogue scenes between the young men, about sex, love and male-female differences, rarely match their ambitions. Korean title simply means "Youth."
