※『Il Mare』

※一段愛情兩個時空,同在IL MARE海邊小屋發生;

Il Mare 2000
(A Love Story, Siworae)

by NIX

"Future Deliveries"

April 8, 2003

If you thought the idea of actual time travel is fraught with disaster, then you should try your hand at writing a Time Travel movie! The smart filmmakers make the conscious decision to address the small paradoxes that creep up, but to ignore the whoppers that stand out like the 800lb gorilla in the living room. For instance, "Terminator 2" addresses the fact that the Terminator sent back in time looks like the Terminator from the original movie (i.e. both were played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), but it ignores this question: if the Terminator was sent back in time to prevent a future event, and if he succeeded, then why would he be sent back in time in the first place, and thus change events? The paradox is maddening.

Hyun-seung Lee, the writer/director of "Il Mare" (aka "A Love Story"), addresses some minor issues involved with time travel, but ignores the biggest Time Travel paradox of them all, as discussed above. Ji-hyun Jun ("My Sassy Girl") stars as Eun-ju, a young woman still pining for a boyfriend who had gone abroad to study 2 years earlier, but who she has not heard from since. As she leaves a beachfront home called Il Mare, Eun-ju leaves a letter in her mailbox meant for the next owner to forward her mail to her new address. At about the same time, Sung-hyun (Jung-Jae Lee) is moving into Il Mare, but as we see, he's just now naming it "Il Mare".

Fast-forward to 20 minutes later in the movie and it's established that the Il Mare mailbox has magical properties. It can send any object 2 years into the future by anyone in the past, or 2 years into the past by anyone in the future. Eun-ju is in the year 2000, and Sung-hyun is in 1998. Although the two are suspicious at first, it doesn't take long before the two mutually lonely people start corresponding, although why Sung-hyun never bothers to ask for lottery numbers or the winners of major sports events, I don't know. (Do they gamble in South Korea?) It doesn't take long before Eun-ju has forgotten about the love of her life that got away, and Sung-hyun is finding salvation in Eun-ju.

"Il Mare" is one of those movies with a fantastical premise that just needs to be accepted without question. Like "Frequency", a movie about a father and son who somehow makes contact over a 30-year span via a ham radio, "Il Mare" is filled with nagging questions that begs to be asked, but doing so will only ruin the enjoyment of the film. As the lovelorn Eun-ju, Ji-hyun Jun once again proves that she plays a better adult than she does a teenager. Jung-Jae Lee ("Last Witness") is equally good as the architecture with troubling family issues.

Unfortunately whereas a lot of Time Travel movies manage to be about something, "Il Mare" is too satisfied with being about nothing. The themes of love and need is just too generic, and for much of the film the two leads spend their time lost in thought or staring off into nothing, pondering about what they've lost and how neither can get on with life, and not realizing that they already have vis-à-vis each other. I guess if you're really prone to long bouts of internal monologue, "Il Mare" will appeal to you. But I wished the film had been about something more than just these two people and their little insignificant problems.

If you could survive the sappy melodrama, then "Il Mare" has some of the most enticing visuals ever put to film. The cinematography by Hong Gyeong-Pyo ("Guns and Talks") is radiant and marvelous to behold. I've never seen interior architecture look so incredible, and I am one of those guys who have as much appreciation for architecture as a football fan with paint on my face. But every time the movie melts away into yet another "personal" scene, there were always the visuals to fall back on. This film is beautiful to look at.

Despite its problems, "Il Mare" is nevertheless a good movie, with fine performances by the two leads. The screenplay is not all doom and gloom, and has bursts of happiness and joy to lighten up the mood. The film itself isn't very dark, it's quite bright and happy-go-lucky, and its idea that life is worth living if you can forget the past is worthy, if you don't already know it. Interestingly enough, the part of my brain prone to thinking didn't have any problems with the time travel angle at all. It was the little things, the every day events in "Il Mare" that kept nagging at me.

Questions like: How does the single Eun-ju afford to live in a place like Il Mare, and then later in a large apartment, when she makes a living as a voice actor? And who exactly is paying for Sung-hyun's Il Mare residence, and how is it that later he can afford to "contract" someone to build a house on a terrific beachside property when he's just a construction worker?

Il Mare

Reviewed By Jason Morehead
Posted 02/18/2003

If I recall correctly, "Il Mare" was my introduction to the world of Korean cinema, specifically the world of Korean melodrama. Given my predilection for kung fu and insane action movies, a romantic drama might seem like an odd introduction. But like "Chungking Express", "Il Mare" was an eye-opening experience; it's not your typical melodrama, or rather, it's a melodrama done so well that it avoids many of the sugary, stomach-turning cliches that can plague the genre. Oh yeah, and it's a time travel movie too. Well, sort of...

As the movie opens, a young woman named Eun-ju is moving out of "Il Mare", a secluded house that juts out on stilts over the ocean. Just before she leaves, she puts a note in the mailbox for the future resident, asking them to forward an important letter to her new address if it arrives. "Il Mare"'s new resident, a young man named Sung-hyun, finds Eun-ju's letter as he's getting the house ready. But he's surprised to find the letter is dated 1999, since the year is actually 1997.

Thinking the letter is a joke at first, he writes back to Eun-ju, who drops by the mailbox to see if her letter has arrived. Although both think the other is kidding (after all, Eun-ju knows it's really 1999), the truth slowly dawns on them. Somehow, "Il Mare"'s mailbox is sending their letters to eachother across time. Curious about this, the two develop a correspondence. At first, it's playful, as the two quiz eachother on what's happening in their respective times and help eachother out (Eun-ju makes a helpful weather prediction for Sung-hyun, and he finds a tape player that she lost in the past).

Thankfully, the film never tries to explain the mailbox. The even-handed approach to the "time travel" aspect keeps it from turning into some cheap gimmick. In fact, by not explaining anything, the movie makes it that much easier to accept. And maybe it's the hopeless romantic in me talking, but I'll admit there's a part of me that really wants to believe that, when two people are meant to find eachother, destiny finds a way to make it happen (even if it involves breaking the fundamental laws of nature). But more importantly, Sung-hyun and Eun-ju don't care how the mailbox works. They're just glad to have someone to talk to, as both are rather lonely individuals.

Eun-ju lives in the big city, where she clearly feels uncomfortable. When she's not working in a comic store or doing voiceovers for a puppet show, she mopes around her apartment waiting for a call from her estranged boyfriend. Ji-hyun Jun's performance as Eun-ju is a complete 180 from her role in "My Sassy Girl", but it's just as enjoyable, and I'm sure to be looking out for any of her future movies. On the other hand, Sung-hyun's sense of isolation stems from the pain of his father's abandonment. After dropping out of architecture school, he cuts off many of his relationships, content to work construction and spend time alone in "Il Mare". That is, until Eun-ju comes along.

"Il Mare" takes its time developing, slowly revealing bits and pieces about Sung-hyun and Eun-ju, just as they do in their letters. Over time, the two begin to slowly open up to eachother, and we get deeper looks into the sadness that filters through both of their lives.

The film has an airy, open feel to it, and despite the occasionally overwrought moments, never really makes itself heavier than it needs to be. Hyun-seung Lee's directing ensures this, with graceful camera movements and gorgeous cinematography (especially the seaside and countryside scenery). A special process was used to make the scenes as vivid as possible and it works splendidly, suffusing the film with light (unfortunately, it is spoiled in some scenes by the DVD's compression levels). Both the film's look and pace often remind me of Wong Kar-Wai and Christopher Doyle's work on "In The Mood For Love", though "Il Mare" is nowhere near as moody and intense.

The obvious question is not if the two will meet, but how and when. Will Eun-ju find a way to travel back in time? Will Sung-hyun wait patiently until he can meet up with her sometime in the future? How will the director accomplish whatever happens without eliciting any groans from the audience? Just as you're asking yourself these questions, the film throws in a tragic twist that throws a wrench in the proceedings.

With a film that looks and sounds this gorgeous - the lovely music, primarily lush piano arrangements, also adds to the film's graceful nature - it's easy to be swept away by its aesthetics. However, "Il Mare"'s simple, well-paced story, honest performances, and heartfelt characters ensure that it's more than just eye candy (and that all but the pickiest of viewers will look past the film's temporal logistics - after all, this isn't "Star Trek"). Rather, it's a genuinely warm, engaging story that you can look forward to watching with great relish each time.

And I just have to mention this: one of my main reasons for buying a region-free DVD player was so I could watch this movie again (it's currently available as a Region 3 disc only). Even though it'd been over a year since I last saw "Il Mare", that's the sort of impression it made on me.

Il Mare Movie Review
by Anthony Leong
Copyright 2002

"Il Mare" (Italian for 'the sea') is the unlikely title for a captivating South Korean romance recently released on Hong Kong import VCD. An audience favorite at the 2000 Pusan International Film Festival, "Il Mare" combines the correspondence of "You've Got Mail" with the time-travel complexities of "Frequency" to create a refreshing and heartfelt story about two lonely people who become connected via a 'magic mailbox'.

The story begins at the tail end of 1999, as voiceover actress Eun-joo (Jun Ji-hyun) moves out of a seaside home named 'Il Mare'. Before leaving, Eun-joo leaves a Christmas card in the mailbox, with a message asking the eventual new owner to forward any mail of hers to her new address in the city. Meanwhile, exactly two years prior in 1997, Il Mare's first owner, architect Sung-hyun (Lee Jung-jae, who recently co-starred opposite Shim Eun-ha in "The Interview"), receives Eun-joo's card. Thinking it to be a joke, he writes back to Eun-joo and asks her not to tamper with his mailbox anymore, while pointing out that the 'current year' is 1997.

However, after a bit of back-and-forth banter, all doubt about the magical properties of the mailbox are soon erased, and Eun-joo and Sung-hyun begin sending regular correspondence to each other. In addition to finding out that they are both kindred spirits, they come up with new uses for their unique connection: Sung-hyun is able to return a tape recorder that Eun-joo lost two years ago, while Eun-joo is able to send back a still-unpublished book by Sung-hyun's estranged father. Eventually, they agree to meet in person-- an uneasy task given their separate time periods. Though the agreed-upon day is only a week away from Eun-joo's perspective, it is still a full two years from where Sung-hyun stands. Will these two lovelorn pen pals meet?

The most obvious standout aspect of "Il Mare" are the time-constrained interactions between Eun-joo and Sung-hyun's, which result in a number of gee-whiz moments and thought-provoking scenes, such as the film's ending, which is heart-wrenching, uplifting, and mind-blowing at the same time. However, what makes "Il Mare" so memorable is the well-told love story at its core. Without resorting to overt melodrama, director Lee Hyun-seung chronicles the blossoming romance between his two protagonists and how their regrets of the past threaten to tear them apart, brought to life by the natural performances of the two leads. In addition, Lee conveys a mood of both warmth and melancholy through some stunning cinematography that makes good use of the seaside setting. There is also some good tension generated as Eun-joo and Sung-hyun edge closer towards meeting each other in person, though at times, it seems a little needlessly drawn out. Thankfully, this oversight ends up being redressed with a third-act revelation that only heightens the emotional resonance of their connection.

Despite what could have been a 'gimmicky' premise, "Il Mare" is far from insincere in how it details the emotional bond that develops between two people separated by time. Like two other recent Korean romances of note, "Christmas in August (Palwol ui Christmas)" and "Art Museum by the Zoo (Misuhlgwa yup dongmulgwon)", "Il Mare" goes about its business with a quiet eloquence. True, the script may strain some credibility in terms of delaying the eventual union of its two lovers, but overall, "Il Mare" remains a smart and stirring entry in the romance genre, a bittersweet confection that is not easily forgotten.

Luna sea
