"The Doll Master"
review by hwang
i think in comparison to other recent horror films such as the absolutely insipid Face, The Doll Master is a well energized tour through the funhouse/horrorhouse. i think it's well-conceived, designed, and produced, for that matter. the casting is great. the actors were sufficient as far as presenting facades of humanity- the earnest "unhi", the abnormally introverted quiet girl, the ditzy model, the sociable photographer, the inspective cop- neccesary to sustain the pace of this hollywoodish type of film. TDM's all about the popcorn, the visual experience, and the gags, which includes red-eyed dolls. the concept has a small charm and the sets and all were very well designed. not a noetic film, it's no "A Tale of Two Sisters," but it's definitely not a bad flick. i of course can't say the same for Face and i have feeling i won't be able to claim the same for Ryung which i have yet to see.
