"Lee Na-young (Please Teach Me English) slips back into her ordinary look girl role, while Jeong Jae-young (Silmido) takes on his latest challenge as actor portraying the baseball player who falls in love with her. Telling his down to earth romance with some good drops of humor to balance parts that at times are endangered to shift into sentimental over-drive, director Jang Jin (Guns & Talks) offers the viewers a seldom seen cinematic surprise."

From third person observation, some director has his own world when it comes to their film. Park Chan oak (Old Boy) has his own world and so has Tim Burton (Bat Man). Director Jang Jin seems to have his own world as well. Unlike other director's dark world such as Old Boy (don't mistake...I loved this movie), Jang's world is some what not so dark. He takes dark subjects (North Korean Spy (Spy Lee Chul Jin), Professional Killers (Guns & Talk), Not so bright baseball player about to die(Someone Special)... and so forth) and put a little "twist" in the movie. That "twist" is usually love. His character always seems to find love in not so romatic situation and Jang does wonder in making that combination work out. And the end product usually is fun, feel good, and heart warming movie.
Jang's world does not exist in real life yet it's not a fairy tale either. I initially thought Director Jang was "Trentino/John Woo wannabee" but after seeing "Someone Special" He has his own world and he patiently and painstalkingly takes time to tell it in the movie.
Bottomline,
I liked "Someone Special" because it start with some what dark subject and ended up maikng me fall in love with both characters.
Also, I think one of the reason This type of movie does not succeed in Korean film market is due to a impatient nature of korean society. Because you have to watch at least two times to watch this movie to pick-up all the humor.
Darcy,
Have you ever wanted to start a distributing company? I noticed there's a lot of under-rated movie that would actually do well in international market if the marketing was done properly (which I know nothing about...)
Just a thought...
