Yup, it was frustrating to have TH’s character do so little. Although like you I was surprised when he, at the eleventh hour, stepped up to fend off the blows meant for DG. TH has always been gallant and chivalrous, but I hope this is an indication that something else has begun to stir inside him.
I think both men pretty much came undone at the smell of death (who wouldn't?) -- even DG, who probably considers himself already dead on some level.
Perhaps treading on very thin ice (…towards getting banned from this thread… hehe), I’m posting some small as well as biggish spoilers.
Or more like lies people made up for attention?! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Seeing as many of you are tormented/fascinated by El Diablo (including moi, aka TH and Kwang-Jae lover), I'll start with one that concerns him.
• In Ep 18 preview, I think (? sorry I don’t know why but I wasn’t very focused during Ep 17; will have to do a snail-speed DL and rewatch) there’s a bit of a loggerhead between HCU and his Paa-in-law. Apparently, this is the planting of the seed for a lucrative FUTURE storyline.
All is not it seems with HCU.
There is something going on.
He will be helping DG and TH.
Again, HEARSAY.
(Otherwise Jill4675 may have to modify her El Diablo gif, hehe.)
• EP 18: DG and TH escape the hanging thanks to the slave troop and CJH.
Apparently in Ep 17 back at the jailhouse, CJH and DG were talking in a ‘coded’ language -- which clued CJH in to Jjwakgwi’s (henceforth, “JG”) whereabouts. CJH immediately heads off with DG’s message (“I’m behind bars”) and runs into GC and WS. (They probably started on their journey at around the same hour?). He fills everyone in on DG’s grave peril.
The rumor doesn’t explain how the ‘coalition’ between all the different franctions comes into being, but somehow a rescue team is swiftly dispatched (which, supposedly, accounts for Eop-Bok and his GF being planted at the execution site).
Cut to the gallows -- DG has about given up and is turning sallow (and yeah it sounded like “얘들아~!”. Literally, “Kids!”, can also mean “Guys!” TH also referred to his men using this in past eps). At this life-determining juncture, the discovery that GC and WS are undead (perhaps DG caught their faces in the crowd? Rumor doesn’t say) gives DG a sudden burst of fighting power and he proceeds to thrash every guard on the platform.
Members of the slave troop (including possibly a female) take care of the rest of the guards, while CJH and one (or two) other key male character(s) release DG.
TH is also freed, and ends up joining the coalition.
A separate rumor hints at assistance from “spear-holding men” and/or the Qings.
I chose the above over other spoilers rumors -- some of which don’t gel with or even contradict the above/other major spoilers we’ve seen so far. Or maybe I’m just not very good at piecing different info together… Either way, I’m holding on to those for now.
Also, some spoilers rumors seem to suggest that JG (Jjakgwi, in case you're still getting used to the acronym) is ready to pop up very soon -- which is going against media reports that Ahn Gil-Kang only started filming last week.
My mind is spinning, spinning like a spider spinning her web.

For headache's sake, I decided to post one of the 'alternative' rumors:-
HCU terminates the execution -- on account of him not being done with the questioning. This allegedly contributes to the disagreement between him and Paa-in-law in the preview.
Hmmmmm.

真后悔昨天看了直播~，晕！昨晚才补完13~~
。。。还有，大吉在门外看到的那双鞋，莫非就是当年他送她的那一双吗~~看着是一样的。。
