ripgal, thanks a lot for this Cheon Seong-Il interview. Wonderful read, but he’s keeping so mum about the ending (duh). For the love of Haley Joel Osment, I’m not even asking him to reveal if Dae-Gil or Tae-Ha is a ghost, but the man is not giving a thing away.
Anyway here are some bits and pieces. I got lazy so some parts may not be word-for word.
• "I have three scripts left to work on: episodes 22, 23, and 24, but we still have a very, very long way to go."
(Notes: This interview was published on 3/4.)
• "Maybe it’s my nature, but I don’t see any heroes in ‘Chuno’. Indeed, from his appearance and martial arts skills to his personal history of bouncing back up from a dignified fall to the rock-bottom, Song Ta-Ha probably possesses the best conditions to be a hero. Yet at the same time, he is someone who of his own accord is reluctant to become one. That, to me, is pretty much reality. Whenever I am asked about the ending, I always tell people that every story is a tragicomedy where elements of both coexist."
• "The original movie scenario was a hard-boiled action noir; many things changed when it became a TV miniseries. None of the supporting roles you’ve seen in the drama made an appearance. There was Tae-Ha, and Dae-Gil, Wang Son and General Choi. And instead of Hye-Won, we had Tae-Ha’s younger sister."
• Q: As Cheon Ji-Ho, Seong Dong-Il gave a spine-tingling performance that left audiences in awe. He’s a “Cheon”, too, and so presumably akin to your ancestor? (laughs)
A: That is right. I wasn’t particularly bothered about giving him a last name, I don’t know how I ended up giving him my family’s. …I think I might get a scolding at the next clan gathering. “Cheon” surname-holders originally came from China during the Ming Dynasty; they were yangbans who were granted government positions. From an early age I was diligently and zealously educated in our family genealogy. There was actually a secret story about Cheon Ji-Ho also being born a yangban, but eventually I took it out.* No, I’m not trying to let everyone know that we too are yangbans (laughs)! My point in giving Cheon Ji-Ho a last name, I guess, was to illustrate that, yangban or sangnom (commoner), as we live in this world, we never can tell what changes life is going to bring us.
(*Notes: During the early Joseon Dynasty, sangnoms did not have family names -- although this gradually changed as they began to adopt names in order to avoid the stigma of low status. Also, maybe the writer did slip in a hint after all about Cheon Ji-Ho’s noble birth? In Ep 18, a grieving Dae-Gil can be heard calling the dead Cheon Ji-Ho “yangban”.)
• "“Just because others think differently from me, does that mean all their thoughts are wrong?”* Maybe that’s one reason why Song Tae-Ha cannot become a hero -- because he troubles over things that even a hero doesn’t think about. As a general rule, a hero should just be saying “Follow me!” and then run ahead for things to be interesting. I feel kind of bad for Oh Ji-Ho. He could’ve been this super awesome character, yet he must kill himself off. Must be hard for him when he looks at the script."
(*Notes: This is from TH’s dialogue with his men in Ep 14.)
• Q: …There are concerns that (characters including Dae-Gil and Tae-Ha) will meet a tragic end.
A: Personal interpretations may differ, but in my own way I’d like to close it in a happy ending. To be specific would mean giving spoilers, but ultimately, I think hope will turn into belief. To put it plainly, even then there is hope -- yet it is so far away, so hard, so exhausting. The emphasis is not on “hope”, but on “even then”.
xxx
There’s more of course but it’s so super looooong…
He’s being so abstract with the ending, my small brain couldn’t relate.
And whether he meant “must kill himself off” literally or not, already it's giving me the “uh-oh” feeling. Ahhh~, should I lower my Chuno hopes and dreams to make them more manageable?
