[REVIEW] SBS TV series "Oh! My Lady"

"Oh! My Lady" - Second episode (SBS TV, Monday/Tuesday evenings 8:50 P.M.)
"Who are you, ahjumma [a Korean term referring to middle aged women]?" One day she appears as a housemaid and drives him crazy with her talking back and meddling, and the next day she turns up as an intern at a musical production company and says out of the blue that she will provide him with a new life as an actor. And the same night she comes into the house with a child she does not know when the owner is not there. It is no wonder that Sung Min-woo (played by Choi Si-won) would be curious about the identity of this shameless ahjumma Yoon Gae-hwa (played by Chae Rim). The next morning, she begins bargaining for Sung Min-woo's appearance in a musical on the condition that she can break out a scandal that "top star Sung Min-woo has a five-year-old daughter." It would be generous to call it a negotiation when it is rather a threat in disguise having a letter and a photograph of the child in her hands.
The use of familiar characters and predictable development of the story, which has already been countlessly repeated in other dramas, is not as problematic as the world of show business that "Oh! My Lady" depicts of quite easily under the name of coincidence. In "Oh! My Lady", the scary truth -- like the sayings "where there's smoke, there's fire" or "fire becomes a forest fire" -- is light enough for an ordinary ahjumma to control. Hence even viewers are bound to get as curious as Sung Min-woo just how far Yoon Gae-hwa will go to get a job so she can support her daughter.
So that is why there is still more to watch in "Oh! My Lady". On top of having with a manager who has taken advantage of his weakness, Sung Min-woo has to deal with a daughter who has suddenly turned up and Yoon Gae-hwa is so desperate that she has to get a job through Sung Min-woo, even if she has to threaten or meddle with him. Even in such obvious circumstances, their desperate -- in their own way -- clashes with each other is probably the only synergy effect that "Oh! My Lady" can hope for. The role of Yoo Shi-joon (played by Lee Hyun-woo), who has become president after being a manager, does not look like it will remain just a helper for Yoon Gae-hwa. How can "Oh! My Lady" make a different dish out of these cliche ingredients?
