You are right, U.S. passports have generally been blue but they also come in different colors.
Black is issued to civilian and military personnel and their families on diplomatic assignments overseas for the government and maroon red for those on official government business overseas which is not classified as diplomatic. Green was issued during 1993-1994 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Consular Service with a tribute to Benjamin Franklin.
