The drama ‘Rooftop Prince’ received favorable comments from the viewers.
On the 21st after its first episode was broadcasted, for ‘Rooftop Prince’ of SBS, there had been a little concern regarding a series of factitious coincidence and too complicated story lines. However, only after its second episode was aired, it could get rid of such apprehensive voices and attract audiences by presenting the stories of the characters who came across the time to modern world from the past experiencing various things with a great deal of trouble and by unfolding the love-line between two starring roles.
Breakthrough 1: Well-known Screenplay Writer, Lee Heemyung
‘Rooftop Prince’ drew a great attention even before it was broadcasted because screenplay writer, Lee Heemyung who made such megahits as ‘Mr. Q,’ ‘Tomato,’ and ‘Successful Story of a Cheerful Girl’ chose to make a comeback through ‘Rooftop Prince’ in 6 years. But, it was true that there was a little bit of suspicion whether his style could work this time since all the big hit dramas made by him came out between the late 1990s and the early 2000.
However, the famous screenplay writer was indeed different. He placed unexpected points of laughter here and there inside the drama for the viewers and delivered irrepressible laughs to them. His powerful and leading appeal to the audience remains undiminished. Particularly, the highlight of the scenes in the 2nd episode aired on the 22nd was the conversation between an employee of the convenience store and Lee Gak, who got in there with hunger. He said to the employee, “Come here, bring me something to eat right away” (in the way of Prince’s talking in Chosun Dynasty*). But, in return, the employee gave him a ridiculous look and a sigh. Again, the unpredictable response from Lee Gak saying “it will not be a bargain and I will pay you generously” was more than enough to make viewers laugh hard. Skillful mixtures of what happens derived from the gap between the past and the present brought a delicious table to the audience.
Breakthrough 2: Impassioned Performances by The Casts.
Park Yuchun within this drama was not the one who sang ‘Kissmyen Darling’ with his sweet voice anymore. He was the perfect Crown Prince of Chosun wearing such an unchic red sweatsuit with long hair likely to appear in a sitcom and showing such a bright smile. Actually, nobody expected that he who turned to be an actor from an idol star dominating entire Asia can give such a tasteful performance to the viewers. But, he amazed the audience one more time by not hesitating to show a completely silly feature as if he was laughable to everybody.
Han Jimin, the heroin, also completely merged into this drama. She even showed an attitude of self-sacrifice by acting without any make-up to fit herself to her role, Park Ha who is cheerful, but a strong character for survival. Her performance of shedding tears right after a bright smile proved the fact that how much she made herself melt into this drama.
In addition, together with Park Yuchun, called as Chosun version of F4, Jung Seokwon, Lee Minho and Choi Wooshik are loved by viewers by showing preposterous characters which are very different from their previous performances. AhnTaesang who plays the policeman gives a proper support to the smooth flow of the story and maintains overall balance in the drama quiet well.
Breakthrough 3: Power of Attracting All Generation in The Family
At 10 o’clock at night, the time when all the family members gather together and turn on the TV, we can imagine the war to snatch the remote controller of the TV. ‘Rooftop Prince’ is the unique program which brings peace to families. This brilliant drama which is easy to approach with the storyline that is not too heavy and not too difficult and provides a perfect alternative for all of the members of the family regardless of their genders and ages to end their day with a big laugh.
Moreover, compared to the competing dramas aired at the same time, The King: Two Hearts and Jukdo, romantic comedy is a genre to which various age groups can have an easier access. It takes a fairly long while for us to meet a drama that has a perfect fit for our late evening with pleasant laughs to wash away the exhaustion of the day. For such reasons, ‘Rooftop Prince’ has enough charms to attract all of the family members to the TV.
It will be an interesting point to see whether such breakthroughs of Rooftop Prince can be crucial leverages to lift the drama to the top from the current second place in the intense war among 3 dramas broadcasted on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
