Directed by Park Kwang-su and written by Lee Chang-dong, the famous film director and incumbent Minister of Culture, "A Single Spark" virtually sparked a fire throughout the film industry. Though the subject was suppressed during the military government regime, the investment made by citizens finally made the movie's production possible in 1995. In 1970, Chun Tae-il ignited the workers' awakening in Korea against the miserable working conditions for thousands of teenagers. The film depicts Chun Tae-il's short life and his struggle to improve labor conditions in the Pyeonghwa Market manufacturing workshops. After shifting from one job to another to support his family, Chun, at age 17, ends up in a clothes-making workshop in Pyeonghwa Market. The market is packed with hundreds of clothes workshops where the majority of the workforce are teenage girls. These girls work over 15 hours a day in small spaces filled with dust and noise. While striving to find a way to improve their working conditions, Chun comes to know that the Labor Standard Act might save them. The DVD set of "A Single Park" includes a supplement with the director's filmmaking process as well as records, photographs, and journals by Chun. |
