LIVE LIKE A GLADIATOR -- CASE IN POINT: JANG HYEOK IN ‘CHUNO’ (3/1)
EXCERPTS
Q: We see other characters in Chuno with their spirit of the times and just causes. In that respect, the role Song Tae-Ha as played by Oh Ji-Ho seems to have elements that stand out more…
A: Song Tae-Ha dreams of a revolution. The difference between the characters of Dae-Gil and Song Tae-Ha is like the difference between "Gladiator" and "Braveheart". But that doesn’t mean Dae-Gil is a representative of the people either. His status is that of a yangban. Yet he hangs out with the cheonmins (the lowest class of people). He dreams of revenge. His character is sustained by revenge and love. Without those, he would not be able to keep his head above the water day after day. That’s why I think Dae-Gil is a great character.
Q: Audiences are most anxious about Chuno’s ending…
A: The story ultimately races along explaining how Prince Sok-Gyeon was brought to Ganghwa Island. Amidst that, Dae-Gil and Eon-Nyeon’s love will come up, and there will be confrontation, too. I would be cool with an open ending (뻔하지 않어, not clear/obvious). The history as portrayed by Chuno through the camera all this time just coming to a halt at some point. That’s how people lived. And yet time continued to pass. It would be nice to have this kind of objective conclusion.

Because I’m a nerd, I secretly enjoyed making a timeline of Prince Sok-Gyeon (which may help to outline the events in Chuno):-
• 1644 - Born in Shenyang, Qing while father Crown Prince Sohyeon was political hostage.
• 1645 - Father dies from rumored filicide two months after returning to Joseon.
• 1646 - Mother dies by taking poison on orders of grandfather (King Injo).
• 1648 - Banished to Jeju Island along with two brothers. He was four. Both elder boys die in same year, cause unclear but theories abound (?).
• 1649 - Ascension of uncle Prince Bongrim (King Hyojong). (Hyojong had a short rule. “He had too much stress dealing with numerous problems inside and outside of the country, and died at the early age of 41 in 1659,” says Wiki. Unlike Sohyeon, Hyojong started out with hostile feelings towards Qing but later came around (if not enthusiastically). He was considered a king dedicated to reconstructing the nation -- rooting out corrupt officials, reforming the military, promoting agriculture. In Chuno, Hyojong will be played by Lee Jun.)
• 1650 - Out of compassion, Hyojong allows Sok-Gyeon to be transferred to a location closer to Hanyang -- first to Ganghwa Island (as mentioned by JH above), then to Gyodong Island -- and even assigns medical staff to serve his nephew there. Hyojong also starts looking for suitable matches for his nieces (Sok-Gyeon’s sisters). All in all, signs that the tide is gradually turning for the better.
• 1654 - Hyojong turns down an appeal by veteran scholar-politician Hong U-Won to have Sok-Gyeon released. (Given some parties’ doubts about Hyojong’s own legitimacy as the rightful monarch, it was only natural for him to exercise maximum caution.) The King however offers Hong this: “It is truly praiseworthy of you to easily say what others find difficult to utter. I am willing to keep (this matter) in mind.”
• 1656 - With little objection even from the ministers, the exile finally comes to an end and Sok-Gyeon is freed to live in Hanyang with a monthly stipend.
• 1659 - It is the 10th year of King Hyojong. Perhaps sensing that death is near, Hyojong reinstates Sok-Gyeon as a member of the peerage and invests in him the formal title of Gyeong-An Gun. (The title meant that Sok-Gyeon will now be accorded treatment befitting royalty.) Hyojong also bestows upon his nephew royal garments and an imperial mansion in Daeja-dong (near Hanyang). The King further confers titles/posthumous titles on all his late brother’s other children. Two months later, Hyojong dies.
• 1665 - After returning from a hot spring excursion, Sok-Gyeon falls ill and dies. He is survived by two sons.
It’s sad how ruthless destiny can be to someone as pure and innocent as the Sok-Gyeon we know from Chuno…
