The Man From Nowhere outsells I Saw The Devil, and now The Housemaid at the box office
[17/08/2010] Seoul, Korea – Choi Min Sik’s return from his five-year respite was not enough to slow down the impressive run that The Man From Nowhere made. Starring Won Bin, the film sold 760,000 tickets in its second week (Aug. 13 – 15), defending its top position. With its cumulative total of tickets sold at 2,360,000, it appears that The Man From Nowhere will slow down for no one.
The Man From Nowhere has now grossed more ticket sales than The Housemaid, and there are only six other movies this year that have grossed more than The Man (including Jeon Woo Chi: The Taoist Wizard, which opened Dec. 23 last year). With its impressive climb at the box office, The Man From Nowhere may soon pass The Servant (3,010,000 tickets) and Harmony (3,040,000). Into The Fire (3,350,000) and Moss (also 3,350,000) are within range as well.
Kim Ji Woon’s controversial I Saw the Devil opened August 12, garnering 520,000 theatergoers, taking second place after The Man. The top ranks at the late-summer box office were taken by Korean fims, followed third by Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio, fourth by Pixar’s Toy Story 3, and then by Angelina Jolie’s Salt in fifth place.
Inception so far has had a cumulative total of over 4.8 million tickets sold, making it the foreign film that has attracted the greatest number of moviegoers in Korea. That position was last held by Iron Man 2. Among films that opened this year, the top place is held by Secret Reunion that opened February 4 to an audience of 5,460,000. (The all-time record is held by Avatar, which opened December 17 last year and sold more than 13,350,000 tickets.)
The 3D dance flick Step Up 3D, which opened August 5 and Nanny McPhee Returns are currently sixth and seventh, respectively.
