3/10 INTERVIEW WITH CHUNO PD KWAK JEONG-HWAN (not in its entirety but close):
Chuno has turned many working viewers into “rush-home slaves” and PD Kwak Jeong-Hwan wants to eat his cake (mass appeal) and still have it (cinematic appeal).
Again here the theme behind Chuno is stressed: “Even then there is hope”. Whereas his previous work (Conspiracy in the Court) placed emphasis on how the cruelties of reality can frustrate the hopes and desires of individuals, this time round, PD Kwak wanted to deliver a message about the existence of hope that can change reality -- even if the hope is imperceptible. However the director also adds that whether he will succeed in fully conveying his message while maintaining popular interest in the story remains to be seen.
PD Kwak also spoke against the debates surrounding the drama. Hye-Won (controversial to the point of gaining the nickname “Nuisance Eon-Nyeon”) is the depiction of a Joseon woman with little options, and the process of change that follows when she is swept up in the raging waves of the times. On Lee Dae-Gil and Song Tae-Ha, the director remarked that that is what it means to be human -- to have limits and to overcome them, which is essential for supporting character development and enabling the series to progress.
As for General Choi and Wang Son who have been given a second chance at life, PD Kwak explained that at first the two were set to be meet their end in Episode 15. Their deaths were meant to serve as a device for Dae-Gil to realize his own limitations. But, that function aside, the two also provide a means to explore the hope theme and were, therefore, spared for the time being.
By strengthening the supporting roles, PD Kwak found a way to expand writer Cheon Seong-Il’s original 100-minute/6-part movie script to a 24-part TV series.
When asked about the large number of characters who die, PD Kwak replies, “It’s a sageuk about why there is no alternative but to kill them off. I hope people will ask questions like what caused their deaths, and why, indeed, must they die.”

Meanwhile, the most out-of-left-field rumor ever (I shall relay it anyway just for the kick of it): Will there be a/another kiss? In Episode 21? NOT fact. Do with this rumor what you will.
不靠谱/不负责的小道消息:21集会有一个/另一个kiss情节?
--------------------------------------
Also from writer Cheon Seong-Il’s interview:
- Interviewer: Yes, the dream of a hopeful future will take time, what with the prince still so young. But he really is no less popular than the actors. I hear that on set Goraebab gets him to stop crying in the moment.
- Cheon Seong-Il: Ha! Ha! Wouldn’t you know it -- he never eats Saeubab, only Goraebab, brazen little fella. His Royal Highness 'Mama', as can be expected, operates on another level.
(Notes: Saeubab is rice with shrimp, while Goraebap “whale rice” is like Animal Crackers but shaped like sea creatures rather than circus animals and not as sweet.)

CASTING NEWS:
• Signs that Han-Seom may be alive? Jo Seong-Ha (of “The Murderer”) has been booked as a special guest star on Chuno. The actor will play Lee Jae-Jun, a political bigwig. Described as the “de facto power behind Han-Seom”, his character will be introduced in Episode 23 (Mar 24).
Jo has never worked with PD Kwak before but came onboard after a third invitation from the director.
• Newcomer and former Miss Korea contestant Kim Hae-In will reportedly appear in a brief role opposite Kim Ji-Seuk’s character Wang Son in Episode 21 (Mar 17).
