Recap: Queen In-Hyun’s Man Episode 8

Dong-Min glares at the intimate-looking Hee-Jin and Boong-Do at the restaurant.
After lunch, Dong-Min returns to the set frustrated, where Na-Jeong is preparing to film. She asks if the lunch went well. Dong-Min tells her to buy him a drink after the shoot. She can’t believe his audacity.
The director asks if everything went well. Dong-Min replies in the positive. He adds, “I have an idea. Why don’t kill off Queen In-Hyun? It will totally become a hot topic.” The director can’t believe what he is hearing. Na-Jeong explains, “I am not the one that suggested this, Director.” Dong-Min affirms, “It is MY idea.”
Director: Why do we kill Queen In-Hyun?
Dong-Min: Because. She’s annoying. A total eyesore.
Director: If you kill Queen In-Hyun because you are tired of her, that doesn’t make you a king. It makes you a psycho.
Dong-Min replies that is better for a King to stop switching back and forth between wives, and just live with his new one.
Hee-Jin also returns to the set and the director thanks her for working things out. Hee-Jin is trying to call Soo-Kyung when a staff member approaches her and hands a new synopsis. The actor who is playing Jang Hee-Jae (Jang Hee-Bin’s brother) has been hospitalized and the writer changed the drama a bit to accommodate the month-long hospitalization.
Hee-Jin reads the new synopsis and is a bit disturbed by how much her role has changed. She approaches the director and asks, “What happened to the Hahm-Yi-Wan affair?” Hee-Jin is referring to what originally happened in history. This was mentioned in Episode 7 as Minister’s Min’s plan to get rid of Queen In-Hyun’s supporters, such as Hahm Yi-Wan. Remember Boong-Do surprised Min by already knowing about this. It seems that Boong-Do has changed history by executing his plan last episode.
The director asks, “Who is Hahm Yi-Wan?” Didn’t one of Minister Min’s own men turn on him?” When Hee-Jin insists that she is correct but another staff member confirms the director. Hee-Jin realizes that Boong-Do must have changed history. Later on she looks it up on the internet and reads what happened that night when Boong-Do went back to Joseon time. As she is reading, another actor compliments her on her studiousness, although, he says, actors don’t bother doing that when they are no longer newbies.
Soo-Kyung calls back Hee-Jin and Hee-Jin demands to know what the two are doing. Soo-Kyung tells Hee-Jin to just concentrate on her acting. Hee-Jin demands Soo-Kyung put Boong-Do on the phone since Soo-Kyung is her employee.
Hee-Jin tells Boong-Do to leave Soo-Kyung but he replies that it’s okay; he needs her. Hee-Jin asks, “For what?” but Boong-Do only says that it’s a secret. He will meet her later.
Before Boong-Do hangs up, Hee-Jin tells him that the history has changed. Boong-Do affirms that he was the one to change it.
Boong-Do: Of course every person wants to save their own life, but I was worried that I might change the fate of others. So I tried my best to change my own fate without destroying other people’s. I was relieved to see that in the Annals, things turned out all right.
Boong-Do quotes a Confucian saying, “Human beings may plan, but it is up to the Heavens whether everything turns out the way they are supposed to.” When Hee-Jin is silent on the other side, Boong-Do asks if she didn’t understand. Hee-Jin bristles, “Are you making fun of me? You don’t even understand curse words.” Boong-Do assures her that he never laughed at her- she must have an inferiority complex.
Hee-Jin informs Boong-Do that no one knows that the history has changed, only her. Boong-Do affirms this but doesn’t know why she is the only one who knows.
Soo-Kyung continues to question Boong-Do. She asks why he doesn’t have a cellphone. He replies that he doesn’t need one because he doesn’t have anyone to call except Hee-Jin. He doesn’t stay “home” very much. When Soo-Kyung tries to get more details, Boong-Do changes the topic and asks her a question, “What does Hee-Jin need the most right now?”
Soo-Kyung asks why he asks, to which Boong-Do answers, “Because I want to give her something.” Soo-Kyung lets him know that Hee-Jin has no pride and that him even being there at the restaurant was enough for her. Boong-Do replies, “It’s not because she has no pride but because she has good heart. Please help me give the right gift.”
Soo-Kyung tells Boong-Do that she first needs to know the price range, but Boong-Do wants to know what Hee-Jin NEEDS. Soo-Kyung tells him that what Hee-Jin needs is out of his range but Boong-Do assures that that he can take care of it. Soo-Kyung snorts and doesn’t believe a student like Boong-Do can afford what Hee-Jin really needs. Boong-Do takes out a small stack of thousand dollar bills and then a bigger stack. Soo-Kyung is speechless.
Boong-Do asks Soo-Kyung exactly what “oh-geul” means and how he can make Hee-Jin “oh-geul.” “Is my question weird?” Boong-Do asks. Soo-Kyung just nods. She can’t believe this guy. Neither can I. Teeheehee!
Back in Joseon time, Minister Min is being led to his exile through the city. Ja-Soo appears next to him and Minister Min orders Ja-Soo to find out everything about Boong-Do. He is the one that created the trap and then disappeared like the smoke from his room. He wants to know how Boong-Do did that. Boong-Do cannot live while he dies.
Back in modern time, Hee-Jin is filming at night. She is looking around for Soo-Kyung when she sees her manager making weird hand-motions to her. Hee-Jin can’t understand and runs over to her. Soo-Kyung tells her that she was going crazy in frustration from hanging out with Boong-Do. Soo-Kyung doesn’t know if Boong-Do is a good thing or a bad thing for Hee-Jin. She also informs Hee-Jin that Boong-Do is waiting for her. Hee-Jin is delighted and quickly rushes away outside.
Boong-Do is sitting in a car and when he sees Hee-Jin, he lets out a huge breath. Epic background music starts and Boong-Do puts on a serious face as he holds up a car key.
“One, put the car key in (and start car). Two, push (the un-park button). Three, change (gears). Four, press (on accelerator).”
Boong-Do drives toward Hee-Jin with speed and as he gets closer, he repeats out loud with a little bit of panic, “Five, stop (car).” Oy vey. I feel bad for Soo-Kyung who had to teach him all this step by step.
“Six, (open) the window.” Boong-Do leans his head out of the car window and smiles as Hee-Jin.
Hee-Jin rushes over in surprise. Boong-Do calmly continues, “Seven, change (gears). Eight, press (park). Nine, take out (car key).”
Boong-Do leaves the car as Hee-Jin frets. “Where did you get the car? You can’t even drive.”
Boong-Do merely continues, “Ten, give,” as he hands over the car keys to Hee-Jin. “Please take this. This is for saving my life. Soo-Kyung told me that you always wanted this car. She also told me you sold your old car a few months ago due to a tight budget.” Boong-Do looks at the car as he says, “This is easier than riding a horse. Do you want to try riding the car?”
Hee-Jin looks at Boong-Do with surprise and happiness. “Why do you keep on doing this, like in mangas.”
Boong-Do replies that Soo-Kyung told him this would make Hee-Jin “oh-geul” the most. Hee-Jin says, “I’m not just “oh-geul”-ing but also having cold sweats.”
Hee-Jin smiles in happiness until she realizes that Boong-Do must have stolen the car. He assures that he bought it with his own money by selling his father’s heirloom (sword). Hee-Jin can’t believe that he sold an heirloom to give her a car.
When Hee-Jin looks hesitant, Boong-Do comments that the person he knows is not the type to hesitate in receiving a present. Hee-Jin bristles when Boong-Do calls her thick-skinned and shameless. It’s her charm, he reassures.
Boong-Do informs Hee-Jin that his father would have given her something bigger than this, since if Boong-Do had died, the family line would have ended. He wants her to know that his grateful heart is bigger than this present.
Hee-Jin struggles to get into the car and Boong-Do helps her with her hanbok. He informs that the Queen In-Hyun never loses her poise and dignity to which Hee-Jin retorts that is it because she is in a hurry. Hee-Jin proceeds to give the car a test-drive as she circles around and around Boong-Do.
Hee-Jin stops, no longer feeling simply happy. When Boong-Do leans into the car window to ask if she likes it, Hee-Jin starts to accuse him. “You’re a con-artist, right? You knew I was a celebrity and approached me on purpose. The whole time-traveling thing is a lie. You just wanted to play around with me a little but after I revealed that you were my boyfriend, you figured you’d just buy me car and leave, right?! There is no such thing as a time machine in this world.”
Boong-Do replies calmly, “What if this is all a lie. You look like you might even run to the police.” Ruffled, Hee-Jin declares, “Of course! And when you come out after serving your punishment….” Hee-Jin drifts off, “I will ask you to really go out with me.”
Hee-Jin: I wish you were a con artist. Think about it. I have finally met someone who makes my heart beat faster. I connect with that person even without words. Isn’t it better that the person is a con artist of this world, not a possible ghost from the past.
Boong-Do smiles and tells her that she is right about him lying. Hee-Jin just whispers, “That’s a lie.” “Get in,” she demands. When Boong-Do gets in, Hee-Jin tells him that there are other things that cars are used for. She rolls up the windows and leans over to kiss him.
“See,” Hee-Jin says after the kiss, “this is what cars are normally used for when they are stopped. Memorize that.” Hee-Jin tries to leave the car in embarrassment when Boong-Do pulls her over and kisses her.
They stop kissing when they hear a drama staff member call for Hee-Jin. Hee-Jin pulls away and says shyly, “See, people can’t see from outside.” Boong-Do replies, “Yes, I was just thinking that it was a good idea to buy this car.” Puhahahaha!
Hee-Jin asks what Boong-Do will do from now on. Boong-Do will go back to Jeju and wait for the King’s orders. He will then return to the capital and restart his normal life. Hee-Jin snaps, “Back to your normal life? That means you are going to get married. You said you didn’t have a wife and during that time, isn’t it the most important thing to continue the family line? You’re going to get a young wife…”
Boong-Do cuts her off, “Let’s meet in a month. It’s going to take me about a month to settle everything and return to the capital. I’ll come see you then.”
Hee-Jin is surprised, “You don’t have any reason to come back here.” Boong-Do reminds her that he is her boyfriend. He promised to be a good boyfriend.
Boong-Do: Do you remember what you asked last time? What is the cause of our meeting? I’ve thought about it hard but have yet to find the answer. Until I find the answer, I will come see you. That is, if you are okay with it. If I haven’t misunderstood the “good-bye” ritual that you do with anyone and anywhere.
What a teaser!
Back at Hee-Jin’s place, Soo-Kyung wants to know who Boong-Do is. He never rode a plane, he has no ID, he doesn’t have a cellphone, and he doesn’t know the price of car but still has thousands of dollars in his pocket. Hee-Jin reminds Soo-Kyung that she told her before that Boong-Do is from the past. Soo-Kyung can only cry in frustration.
Hee-Jin meets the apartment security guard outside on her way to buy food. He asks after her and learns that the adult story of the drama will appear next week. He thinks that Hee-Jin should move away from a neighborhood like this and suggests that she sell her car to do so. Hee-Jin tells him that the car has another owner that can’t come often so she is just taking care of it for a while.
In a flashback we learn that Hee-Jin and Boong-Do agreed to meet one month later at the exact same place and go on a date all day long. Of course, Boong-Do does not know what a date is. Hee-Jin tells him that she will teach him what a “date” is that day.
Boong-Do is back in Jeju Island in modern time. He heads off to find his place of exile during Joseon time. He changes into his normal clothes and travels back.
Immediately, though, an air flies toward his head. In the ensuing fight, the talisman is cut in half and Boong-Do staggers back, holding his head. He is then injured by a knife on his shoulder.
We have flashback scenes of Boong-Do’s first time travel before Boong-Do wakes up, injured, with Han-Dong nursing him. In the morning, Boong-Do wakes up fully and hears the Jeju official outside worrying over him. We learn that Boong-Do had been unconscious for over ten days. When the government official starts talking about everything that has happened, Boong-Do doesn’t know what everyone is talking about. He can’t remember how and why he is in Jeju. He doesn’t not remember anything of his exile or his reinstatement.
Boong-Do reads the King’s reinstatement orders in confusion. Han-Dong rushes over to Boong-Do and frets over him. Boong-Do does not know why Han-Dong is here. Han-Dong came to escort Boong-Do back to the capital. Boong-Do was found lying with a wound after Minister Min’s assassins tried to kill him.
One of Minister Min’s men who was after Boong-Do is reporting to Ja-Soo. The assassin tells Ja-Soo that after the first attempt on Boong-Do’s life, they searched everywhere on Jeju for four days. Then on the fourth day, Boong-Do just suddenly appeared again. The guy who injured Boong-Do was caught and spilled everything to the government officials.
The lackey hands over the torn talisman to Ja-Soo, telling him that it was found near Boong-Do. Ja-Soo reads the talisman.
Boong-Do learns of the exact day and calculates that he doesn’t have two months worth of memories. Han-Dong is surprised. Boong-Do can’t remember anything after being attacked in the library at the palace two months ago.
Comment:
I did not expect that. I was cooing and swooning during the first half. Then I nearly had a heart attack in the second half.
I was worried about the “butterfly effect” of changing something in history. I thought that the consequences of changing history would be the main plot point in the future episodes. Instead, we get a more romance-centered story where the talisman is broken and the Boong-Do loses his memories. It seems from the previews that Hee-Jin is the only one to retain hers. The drama is doing a good job in building the overarching role of Hee-Jin. We know that Boong-Do must protect In-Hyun, both in the present and the past, but how is Hee-Jin involved in the larger story? Yes, she saves his life and helps him but there seems to be more to Hee-Jin’s function in the drama. Why did Boong-Do first meet Hee-Jin and continuously after that when he traveled through time? Why is Hee-Jin playing Queen In-Hyun in the present? Is it just fate or coincidence? This is K-drama, so it must be fate, but for what reasons? Why is Hee-Jin the only one to remember Boong-Do?
A week is too long to wait….
