OK! my time has come to take part haha
first of all i'd like to apologize for those who will be bothered by my English. I'm french
I was into NIce Guy when I decided to chack on Missing You's first episode and my only complaint about it is: Where the hell have you been all my life, drama??!
I ship Soo Yeon with Jung Woo. Though the choice is super hard ^^
I've seen here and on other blogs (cough*Koala's Playground*cough) that people don't like Jung Woo because he's grabby with Soo Yeon even though she's a rape victim and I have to disagree. First of all, Jung Woo has always had naughty hands with Soo Yeon lol. I rewatched the whole thing and he's always been very keen on skinship with her. Only difference is Soo Yeon was his best friend (and girlfriend to be hehe) but Zoe is a woman who has no reason to accept this behaviour from a man she doesn't know and she's engaged on top of that. So while it can be frustrating to see him push things this way for poor traumatized Soo Yeon, let's recall that she's not her, at least not openly, she's claiming it, and is being pretty rude on top of that. It would actually hav gone typicall kdrama territory if he had been all sweet and understanding EVEN after having waited for a sign of her in 14yrs. I would have called that noble idiocy, and I find it very interesting that it is so criticized in general but people expect Jung Woo to go this route in Missing You...
I love Jung Woo. Like I think I could fall for him in a totally fictional and unhealthy way haha. I don't know if it's because he seems so real or because Yoochun is completely withdrawing himself to emote him...He is very well written also and the most healthy amog the three leads. Every emotion thats crossed his mind in these years, he sorted them to anyone and at first I found that a bit weird and embarassing that everybody seemed to know about his predicament but then I realized that Jung Woo has found here a substitute to therapy, since he has so muc things to say to Soo Yeon but doesn't even know if it is possible yto see her again, he's just willing to shout these words to anyone who has ears to listen (not sure if I make sense here lol). I found it very maddening when I read about people who found that Jung Woo was being too much when his suffering was rather tame compared to Soo Yeon or Hyung Joon but I don't think so. It's well showed in ep.6 when the rapist is beating Jung Woo and he remembers how he was beaten by him the same way when he was 15. I think some people forget that he is also a victim in everything that happened at this time. He was also abducted and beaten minus the rape, but when I think about what he must have lived, being a coward and feeling useless because he couldn't help Soo Yeon when she needed him the most, trusted a father that betrayed him and lost his new role model , and was still unable to have the upper hand when confronted to the same man who broke her life at the time is really hard. It was hard when he was 15 and a defenseless and scared youngster but he is now a man, expected nothing has changed, he's still unable to make the criminals pay and unable to find So Yeon, which is why he still dreams of becoming a "proper adult". I also think that threatening the ones who kidnapped him shows that mental growth that Soo Yeon does not have. It must take a lot to confront them this way when they were once physically superior to him.
I also think it is unfair to expect him to having moved on with his life as time went by, even if it would have been more interesting if they were both with someone when they would meet again. It is true that it was onlt a first love between them but I think that it simply changed them in every ways and thet the tragedy ahppened and the changes were irreversible. I do agree that he loves the memory of Soo Yeon but how could it be differently ? It is the only thing that got him to get through and the only time he fell in love. It does sadden me that he's a virgin though lol. Episode 9 was so telling, when he was trying to get her to listen to him at the party, asking her to trust him and all and she was only asking for Harry, i felt really depressed for him. To me this episode is all about him noticing that even if she is inded Soo Yeon, she is not the same as the girl he knew and he's nowhere in her world by now. I fond it brilliant because, rape plot aside, it is the thought that comes with every break-up. When young Soo Yeon's voice was reading her diary or when he was crying to Omma, he had come to the realizaton that he has lost her for good and it simply hurts.
I love Zoe even more. I saw complaints about the writing being a tad much focused on Jung Woo and I think it's true but it doesn't bother me. In fact, I think it is one of the strength of the drama. It woudl have been so esay to have a drama about "Soo Yeon, brave and sassy, confronting her past and all the usal blabla". But instead, we are exploring a tragedy through someone's eyes, and seeing how it has shaken the people around them. I prefer that, mainly because it permits the drama to have its lighter sides (which are already so short lol) and secondly because when we take things back 14yrs later after the incident, Soo Yeon doesn't exist anymore. She's been caged in a corner of her head ans is now Zoe, never been raped, never gone to Seoul, never been beaten..As much as she is successfull and happy and talented, Zoe is not interesting, dramatically speaking. She gets more fleshed out as we see bits of Soo Yeon leaking out of the new persona of Zo taht she has created to avoid facing her traumatism. But there are signs that she didn't really go through healing process such as har lack of sexual intercourse of course, and the fact that she dislikes strangers: she was uncomfortable with Mi-Ran, and so awkward when the doctor came for Harry. I think this is why she doesn't have friends, even though she seems to draw people to her as seen in episode 5. She can't bring herself to trust anyone that is not Harry. She also still has a serious inferirity complex IMO.
Missing You DAEBAK <3 (wow that was lengthy! lol)
just my mere thoughts about a show that is driving me crazy ^^
