November 4, 2014 (Honolulu, HI) The 34th edition of Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) presented by Halekulani announced their Jury winners at a private ceremony this evening.

The Golden Orchid is bestowed upon the narrative and documentary films that best express artistic and technical excellence and promote cross-cultural understanding. Each nominated film furthers the Hawaii International Film Festival mandate to entertain, enlighten and empower. An international jury will selected films that articulate this manifesto consistent with the cross-pollination of words, ideas and images that comprise the kinetic and visceral power of film.

The Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Narrative Feature was awarded to director Shim Sung-bo for his the film, HAEMOO.

“Haemoo is a powerhouse debut from director Shim Sung-bo, who shows enormous potential for raising even further the profile of Asian and Pacific Rim cinema on the world stage. This is a visually arresting, riveting and compelling film, which displays both technical excellence, and a strong emotional core. The film simultaneously addresses universal questions of human nature and morality, and more specific issues, such as corruption, economic inequality and immigration.” said jurors. “With its strong commercial appeal, Haemoo is in the position to raise consciousness about human trafficking, its causes and terrible consequences.”

HAEMOO is also South Korea’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar®.

The jury also honored the thriller feature film, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT with honorable mentions for Director Ana Lily Amirpour and lead actress Sheila Vand.

The jurors shared that “A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT confirms Ana Lily Amirpour as a strong, incredibly original and imaginative new voice in American cinema. She has also given the world its first skateboarding hijab-clad female vampire, wonderfully embodied by actress Shelia Vand, whose performance is spellbinding.”

The Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Documentary Feature was awarded to WE ARE THE GIANT. Directed by Greg Barker, the film explores the recent protests around the world; each buoyed by predominantely young participants and social-media organizing, have exposed repression and led to regime changes.

“WE ARE THE GIANT grapples with perhaps the most difficult question of modernity and so humanely captures the delicate turning point between non-violent activism and armed conflict.” Said Doc juror Wei Fang. “The film’s power lies not only in sharing powerful stories from the Middle East, but also in showing us that even here in Hawaii, our participation in local activism is a profoundly important exercise to be engaged in.”
Founded in 1990 by Cinemaya and UNESCO, the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting Asian film throughout the world. The prestigious NETPAC award is given at select international film festivals to promote Asian cinema by spotlighting exceptional works and discovering new talent. The NETPAC award is presented annually at international film festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam, Pusan, Singapore, Taiwan, Yamagata, Amiens and Hawaii. HIFF is the only film festival in North America given permission to present the NETPAC award. This year, the NETPAC AWARD went to Kanu Bell for the narrative feature TITLI.

The Audience Awards for Favorite Narrative Feature, Documentary and Short Film, presented by Hawaii News Now, will be announced on Tuesday November 11.

AFI Fest Review: Haemoo
Desperate men will go to great lengths to protect what is theirs, or to get what they believe should be theirs.  So it goes in Sung-bo Shim's grisly Haemoo, which unfolds in the midst of the IMF crisis.  Ship captain Cheol-joo (Kim Yoon-seok) can't even afford to feed his crew, so he takes on some valuable cargo: a couple dozen Chinese-Korean immigrants trying to make it to Korea.  The crew has its treipdations, but the financial situation - and the idea of having vulnerable women on board - wins out.

What follows is a shocking series of events, which I won't spoil here.  The film's title translates to "sea fog," referring to the literal fog that eerily drapes the ship, and the unknowable depths of dark humanity the various people on the ship hide.  Each of the crew is driven by something primal: a sense of justice, a thirst for power, a raging hard-on, and love are among the motivating factors.  Naturally, these are all at odds, and the chaos that results is gruesome.

Haemoo is a feast of good acting, though some of the performances (namely Lee Hee-joon as the hormone-enraged  Chang-wook) border on caricature.  The heightened emotions and the sudden acts of violence make one wonder if there's something supernatural about that fog, or if it empowers men to behave as they will, believing their sins to be hidden in the thick, rolling mist.  Either way, the film shows that one step into murky morality necessitates more, until one is running headfirst into
pitch-black villainy.

At the heart of the turmoil is young, lovestruck Dong-sik (Park Yoochun), who stows away the beautiful Hong-mae (Han Ye-ri) in the engine room and plans to marry her upon arrival.  Any sailor knows that a woman on board is bad luck, and Hong-mae proves a particularly troublesome example, through no fault of her own.  The love story serves as a softer counterpoint to the film's grimmer scenes, and it has a gutting payoff all its own; this is no Titanic.

Haemoo is tight, the film a much better construction than the ship it centers on.  It's an exercise in excruciating tension, wondering how far these men will go, all the time the pirate adage echoing somewhere from beneath the waves: "Dead men tell no tales."  Once the stage is set and the fish hold is opened, Haemoo doesn't relent until its curiously tender epilogue; this is a film that refuses to let you off the hook.  You're as stuck on this ship as the rest of them, but luckily at a safer distance.

HOLLYWOOD >> Stylish does not feel like the right word to describe a film about a disastrous illegal immigration scheme, but artfully deployed fog and shadow are among the few elements that make watching “Haemoo’s” dreadful goings-on bearable.

Set during the Asian financial crisis earlier in the century, Shim Sung-bo’s directing debut sends the desperate crew of a South Korean fishing trawler out to pick up a catch of even more desperate economic refugees from China. When their dark passage hits the most horrendous glitch imaginable, the crewmen — who have been just adequately enough individuated as regular guys beforehand — essentially descend into deranged savagery.

There’s not much more to it than that, although there is reportedly something about male archetypes revealing their true selves going on. If you ask me, it’s simply justifiable and unrestrained paranoia taking hold that, though naturally dramatic, gets a bit tedious after awhile.

Korean master Bong Joon-ho co-wrote the script, returning the favor for Shim, who worked on Bong’s “Memories of Murder’s” screenplay. That movie was better written, but this one’s got the looks.

AFI Fest 2014 welcomed one of South Korea’s biggest hits of the year with open arms Sunday as “Haemoo” director Shim Sung-bo attended the red carpet screening of his directorial debut.

“I don’t know if this is reality or a dream, seeing my film being screened in Hollywood,” Shim said outside TCL Chinese Theatre.

Shim said he felt like he had arrived in Korea upon arriving in the city because of the large Korean American population. He hopes they will embrace the film.

“Haemoo,” produced by fellow director Bong Joon-ho, is the second screenplay collaboration by Bong and Shim after critically acclaimed thriller “Memories of Murder” in 2003.

The film follows the struggles of a fishing boat crew and a group of smuggled Chinese illegal immigrants as they fight the dangerous seas on their journey.

Starring heavyweight actor Kim Yoon-seok and Park Yoo-chun, the flick was one of Korea’s most successful this year.

“Haemoo” will screen again at the Chinese Theatre Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. AFI Fest also invited two other Korean films, “Alive” and “A Hard Day,” to this year’s festivities.

Screenwriter Shim Sung-bo (Memories of Murder) directors his first feature film based on the true story of a group of fisherman who face tragic consequences while smuggling illegal immigrants.
Captaining the 69 ton fishing vessel, the Junjin, is Kang, a weathered seaman who decides after years of declining fishing hauls that he needs to take drastic action to make ends meet and keep his crew members in work. He decides to strike a deal with a human trafficking broker to smuggle people into Korea. The ships leaves port with the crew believing they are heading out to catch their biggest haul in years, unaware that they are actually going to pick up Korean-Chinese immigrants. In the open sea Kang rendezvous with a Chinese vessel who unloads its cargo, people, onto the Junjin. Confused at what is happening, the crew members slowly realise what Kang’s intentions are and what they are unwitting part of. The crew look to comfort the abused immigrants while Kang treats them worse than the traffickers. The Junjin stays in open waters unmoving which causes restlessness in the Junjin’s cargo and that of its crew. Tensions and tempers flare as a fog descends on the ship.
Produced by Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Snowpiercer), Haemoo hosts an all star cast in this tension filled drama, including; Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser), Han Ye-ri (Kundo: The Age of the Rampant), Moon Sung-keun (In Another Country) You Seung-mok (Han Gong-ju) and Lee Hee-jun (The Unjust).

《怒海沉淪》朴有天處男作出戰奥斯卡

《怒海沉淪》改編自南韓一宗真實事件,對於香港觀眾來說,事件的來由,普遍都不太熟識,但對於這個名字應該不會陌生吧——朴有天。

朴有天是前「東方神起」成員之一,現已貴為JYJ男子組合要員,不過他今次不是在台上表演,也不是演入屋的韓劇。在電影《怒海沉淪》鏡頭前的朴有天,一反偶像派歌手形象,飾演一艘偷渡船上的新手船員,千辛萬苦找到工作,並在船上遇上偷渡少女,她意外墮海被戲中的朴有天拯救,繼而互生情愫。雖然《怒》是朴有天首齣電影,但演技絕不稚嫰,併在其他實力派演員中(戲中所有演員,幾乎都是在韓片、韓劇見過的實力派演員,包括當年頗為震撼的《追擊者》警察金允錫)也絕對沒有給比下去,他就像一個同屬實力派、滿有經驗的演員,不塗脂粉,用心用力演繹,沒有像一般唱而優則演的藝人,姿姿整整、要三七分面、要鎂光燈寸步不離,又要錫身唔演乜唔演物(其實南韓演員非常專業,一線演員遇到好劇本,一樣要脫和瞓身演出,如全度姸、宋承憲及鄭雨盛等)。從這點來看,朴有天的電影生涯,看來只是個開始。
回歸電影本身,《怒》片題材並不屬於意想不到的驚世之作,但絕對能令南韓人民引起共鳴,該片由真人真事改編,講述1998年金融危機後,南韓船長為求生計,毅然偷運一批從中國逃回國土的南韓人,卻發生意外造成悲劇,船長要在一片海霧(片名的韓文意思)中收拾殘局,過程喪盡天良、道德沉淪。事隔廿多年,事件曾改編為舞台劇,每次在南韓國公演都引來社會激烈回響,以及普羅觀眾的共鳴。所以,該片得以代表南韓競逐明年的奥斯卡最佳外語片獎項,相信與它的社會性有關。

改編自真人真事
《怒》是導演沈聖甫首次執導作品,但他絕非圈外人,早在2003年,他便與今天已是南韓一線大導演的奉俊昊合寫《殺人回憶》的劇本,兩人識於微時,所以今次也順理成章,邀得奉俊昊出任該片監製。驟眼看來,其實《怒》片與奉俊昊的作品也有幾分相似,先是他有份編劇的《殺人回憶》,同樣改編自當地轟動一時的真實罪案,在一個特定的環境下,在嚴峻的危機中考驗人性,寫出人類在絕境中選擇求存還是道德,而《怒》片中的小伙子朴有天,當然也就選擇了道德,以及用生命的危機來換取愛情;而在視覺上,《怒海沉淪》與奉俊昊的《末世列車》亦一脈相乘,來自同一個攝影師的風格,都是善用黑暗中的光影,在群戲中亦能看到角色的面部表情,既有助營造暴風雨前夕的氣氛,亦道出及凸顯了人性黑暗面的主旨。全片以暗黑為主調,相信其中原因是有助拍攝,照估計,該片的偷渡船和海上的場面都是在廠景拍攝,再加插特別效果如海浪、沉船及風暴,甚至海霧等,在暗黑的環境下拍攝特別容易入信,同樣反映了韓片在拍攝技術上的優勢和能力。

之前是電影文字人,現在是電影推廣人以及大小影展搞手。生活冇電影會身痕。

【11/13:#朴有天#,最佳新人男演員獎"以首部電影獲獎…真心感謝"】"2003年底出道至今拍攝了電影,能以電影處女作獲得好獎,真心感謝。光是拍攝'海霧'就令我獲益良多,'海霧'之後公司給了很多劇本,但因產生了一定要拍電影的執著,令公司很辛苦。往後會更努力去演戲,感謝'海霧'的前輩們與工作人員。" "海霧"之後公司給了我很多電視劇劇本,但因為我想拍電影的執著,而令公司感到為難。"
