MBC's 48th Anniversary special drama [Queen Seon-deok] presents the femme fatale Mi-shil, acted by Go Hyeon-jeong. Go reveals her first impressions along with the promotional posters of her character. She recently took part in a half day poster shoot on set in Yong-in, showing off many extravagant costumes of the Shilla court and the female royalty. Also standing tall at over 170cm like her co-star Lee Yo-won, Go Hyeon-jeong in costume emits a strong aura of charisma.
The crew chose to use a lot of gold colors and designs for Lee Yo-won's outfits as Queen Seon-deok, and for Go Hyeon-jeong as Mi-shil they chose to highlight her costumes with silver. This is to reflect Mi-shil's aloof and proud image as well as the strength of one of the greatest palatial women's will in serving and surviving several kings. In order to be in character as the palace's femme fatale, her costumes were created in shades of purple and black, red, white and sky blue. Despite having to wear several costumes and spend a lot of time in make-up, she remained professional and very put together.
The following the interview we held with her.
1) In your near 20 years of acting, your first venture into the historical piece genre happens to be one of a very grand scale. You've played various characters in all kinds of genres in the past, and we imagine this role is a new challenge. How do you feel? (And did you talk to a lot of older actors about acting in a historical piece?)
As my first historical period drama... the set, the make-up, the lighing, the costumes and the tone used when delivering lines is all a new and exciting experience for me. Particularly, the headpiece I have to wear is extremely heavy. Even putting on make-up takes several hours, so everything feels completely different from what I've done in the past. I'm still having a little trouble adjusting, but I'm determined to completely assimilate. The attraction in diving into a new genre is that it fuels inside me the desire to rise up to the challenge of doing something completely unprecedented for me.
2) You decided to play the role of Mi-shil, Queen Seon-deok's greatest rival, the palace femme fatale, and the woman who managed to serve several kings. What do you think about your character and how do you plan to portray her? How would you describe Mi-shil?
I think anyone who leaves their mark in historical is a notable person. And taking part in political struggles for the seat of power and surviving through the cracks of bloodshed and upheaval as a woman is a very difficult, lonely and desperate thing. Therefore, I've always seen Mi-shil as a lonely and solitary figure. Those survival instincts as well as the things she's willing to do in order to win in the power struggles makes her look like a very strong person, but on the inside, she's just a scared and vulnerable young girl who is always worried about her situation.
3) You're part of a stellar cast of both veterans and your juniors. What are your thoughts on the cast?
I'm really looking forward to working with the experienced and talented older actors. It's hard preparing for such a grand drama, but I hope to go to work every day with a smile and not suffer any large injuries.
4) Did you dream anything in particular or suffer any jinxes before starting the drama? Any good signs?
I don't really have a jinx. This was a drama that I really looked forward to. It began when I read the script and continued when I got on set. I can really feel the energy the writer is putting into creating a wonderfully detailed script and the effort the staff is putting into all-nighters in order to create a great drama. And the fact that I'm not the lead in this drama both takes away the pressure and allows me to step up my game.
5) The writer Kim Young-hyeon mentioned that the character of Mi-shil will exude great presence in the beginning of the drama, and he seemed particularly affectionate towards the character. Did you talk to Kim about this drama a lot beforehand?
I worked on the drama [H.I.T] also penned by Kim Young-hyeon in collaboration with Park Sang-yeon, and I first heard about this drama at the end of that one. But that was about all we discussed. But I really like Kim and his writing so I completely trust him in this project.
6) A comment please to the future viewers of [Queen Seon-deok].
[Queen Seon-deok] will be a story about the lives of people. It's about the ambition, love, friendship, fury and other such emotions that is relative to all people and not limited to a certain era. Please look forward to our work. We're working hard to show you a really great drama. Thank you.
