[Special Report] Korean 'Romeo and Juliet' (2011-07-15)

Watching Korean dramas is definitely on the list of various hobbies of Koreans at any age or background. Korean dramas are also exceedingly popular among many Korean Americans. As one of the many lovers of Korean dramas, I attended the promotional press conference of a brand-new drama that will be on air for the first time next Wednesday at 10pm on KBS 2TV, “Princess’s man,” at Shilla Hotel on July 13, 2011.
When I arrived at Shilla Hotel, it wasn’t too hard to locate where the conference was about to be held. My thrilled steps simply followed the noises from fans, photographers and journalists. When my steps led me upstairs, one of the staff members handed me a gift. The gift said, “Thanks for coming” and contained a dazzling yellow raincoat and an expensive-looking USB with “princess’s man” written on top of it. The caring gifts made me forget the exhausting walk up to the hotel.
Outside the conference room, I spotted stacks of filled rice packages in front of the loving messages written by fans of the actors and actresses in the drama. I have seen garlands sent by fans to actors or singers to wish them good luck on TV, but the rice packages were new to me. I later learned that fans nowadays send instead of pretty, but wasteful flowers, rice packages to express their wishes and to help the poor by donating them. This made me realize how utilitarian and considerate Koreans are.
There was still thirty minutes left until the conference, but the place was packed with people from different broadcasters. With busy news reporters hurrying to find a good spot to set their cameras, I could barely find a moment to settle myself.
As I entered the conference room I realized the whooping magnitude of the event; there were about fifty tables with distinct nametags, a stage as big as a stage at a Big Bang concert, oriental decorations surrounding the stage, a wide screen above the stage, a placard with the names of famous Korean actors and actresses, and finally more than two hundred reporters crowding the room.
Ten minutes prior to the conference, photographers and reporters became even busier and more sensitive setting their cameras and laptops for the impending event. I lifted my pen, lay my notebook on my lap and started scribbling down some notes, copying what everyone else was doing.
The tension was broken when two of my favorite Korean comedians, Kim Jun Ho and Kim Dae Hee advanced the stage to officially begin the conference. Although I rarely watch Korean TV shows, I enjoy watching Gag Concert on Sundays with my family during breaks; Kim Jun Ho and Kim Dae Hee are big contributors to the show. The atmosphere of the conference lightened up as the two comedians made impromptu jokes while informing the audience about the brand-new drama. I couldn’t believe they were standing only about three meters from where I was sitting.
I felt as if I was invited to a VIP seat at Gag Concert. The thought of telling my brother that I saw our favorite comedians in real life excited me. The two comedians notified the audience that “Princess’s man” deals with a heartbreaking romance between a daughter and a son from two contending noble families during 1453 Cho sun. The fact that the drama deals with an aspect of Korean history frightened me a little, but after the highlight parts of the drama were displayed, I realized my fear was unnecessary. The drama was made easy for any teenagers or Korean Americans to comprehend easily. It is a Korean “Romeo and Juliet.”
Finally, it was the time that I’ve been craving for came. Flashes from cameras started pouring on main actors, Park Si Hu and Song Jong Ho, and actresses, Moon Chae Won and Hong Su Hyun, as they progressed up to the stage for an interview and a photo time.
Although I couldn’t really recognize any of the faces, they all looked breathtakingly beautiful in Han Bok. This made very proud of my root. The two main actors were both taller than average men and had a head size smaller than a basketball. The two main actresses both had perfect skin and sparkling eyes. I thought that anyone could tell that they were born to be TV stars. As I watched them walk right in front of me as they were walking back to their assigned rooms, I still couldn’t believe my eyes. Even though I was there as a one-day reporter, I still felt the thrill that any teenagers would feel when they spot a TV star.
I would say, I lived a dream today. It was definitely an extraordinary experience that I will never forget. The experience was a combination of excitement, respect for all hard-working reporters, actors and actresses, and wonder.
